No. O no no don't tape! Bad idea! If you wear away a lot from the edge you MUST wear away a proportional amount from the spine! Don't change the bevel angle unless you know what it is and need to make it blunter! Using tape is a specialized technique. Very seldom is it called for.

Pics are gone. In general for a big chip breadknife the edge and then raise a burr on each side in turn to ensure you have a be el, then remove the burr with regular laps. This way you know that:

1. The edge is ding-free
2. The edge is nice and straight. Easier for a newbie to hone.
3. The bevel is unquestio ably set.
4. The razor is ready for a progression of films, or if you are a rock rubber, a progression of stones.

The bevel is the edge. The progression simply smooths and polishes. Without a properly set bevel you have nothing no matter how many fine finishers you have.

For very small chips just hone normally on a coarse hone until they are absolutely gone, then check your bevel and run your progression.

I respectfully disagree Slash.

And breadknifing a blade changes the geometry the same as taping the spine.

Yes it does, but this is easily compensated with a pressure bias toward the spine. That should be obvious which is why I didn't point that out.
