My first shave on a razor I honed

I had my first shave on a razor I personally honed today! It wasn't a great shave by any definition, and I still have a lot of work to do on the edge. However, I was able to do a full shave and get a SAS (I usually get a DFS with my shavette). Also, not much more razor burn than normal and there wasn't a ton of tugging, either. I consider that a success for my first shaveable (barely) hone! It only took three days to get this far, but I expected it will be a while before I get an edge that will give me a DFS... The honing was done with the Whippeddog quarter stones.

The honing was done on a razor I bought from a member here so I could learn the upkeep of a straight before I bought me a nicer blade. I only shaved with it 3-4 times before I ruined the edge--maybe it was poor stropping technique; I think I rolled the edge.... Oh well, you live and you learn...

That is a milestone. You know it can be done and so now it becomes a matter of becoming good at it and being able to handle more difficult to hone blades.

You deserve to celebrate. Get a cigar, have an adult beverage and bask in the glow of having rubbed cold steel on hard rock and than groomed yourself with the result.

Much better than my first time! I rolled the edge on my first razor which wasnt shave ready to begin with. I got another one and rolled that one too. Keep it up. Theres a lot of reading here about honing. You will get there if you want it. Just keep it simple. You need a 1k or equivalent 4 and 8k and a finisher or equivalent. Paddle strop broke my bad habit of rolling edges. I use the hanger now. Enjoy!

Sounds great! Did you also strop on the balsa with cr0x in the poor man kit? I also shaved with my first honed razor last week, was quite a feeling :)

Congrats! There's no better feeling than to shave with an edge that you honed yourself.. Just keep at it & you'll get better and better every time! :thumbup1:

It's always great to lose that trepedation of dulling a razor and having to send it out. Grats!
