What's new

My first SE

Picked up my first SE today.

It is a silver Ever-Ready 1912 that has an ornated handle.
(Sorry no pics)

Will pick up some blades next month and give it a try.

Also saw another one but I couldn't make out the finish.

I thought it (really dirty) may be gold or brass.

If it was brass then the question, "Got Brasso" would apply.

If you get some good blades and learn to use the razor at the correct angle, you should be able to achieve the best shaves of your life with the 1912.

I recommend the "Gem by Pesonna" coated stainless blades sold at some drug stores. The coated stainless blades sold by Ted Pella are, in my opinion, the same blade.

The angle and the way you hold the razor are a little different than when using a double edged razor, but a little experimenting and practice will get you on your way to great shaves in short order. Start out with the razor almost flat against your face and then slowly bring the angle up until you can see and hear that it is cutting off those whiskers.

The 1912 is one of the best shavers ever made, in my experience. The only thing I've found that I like better is it's predecessor, the 1900/1901 patent Gem Jr. Bar Razor.

Regards,
Tom

My Ever Ready 1912 is a "gem" so to speak. Angle is almost laying on your face. Listen for the sound... you can hear those whiskers being mowed down !!!!

The 1912 GEMS are indeed among the best shavers out there. I am convinced they are superior to the Gillette products and only because of superior marketing did the DE's manage to thrive longer.

That's a really interesting observation.

I've seen advertisements by Gillette where they tout how a double edge blade lasts twice as long as single edge because it has twice as many edges.

Gillette also managed to get their product into the hands of millions of GI's and many became customers for life.

If ASR had marketed themselves they way Gillette did, it could very well be a different shaving world.
