Hey guys, Got this as a graduation present from my wife. This is my first real humidor. I'm in the seasoning process now before I start filling it up with goodness. For the pipe smokers, is there benefit to storing pipe tobacco in a humidor?
That is a beautiful humidor. There is no advantage in storing pipe tobacco in that though. As already stated, mason jars is a perfect way of storing bulk tobacco, and unopened tins will keep tinned tobacco perfect. I have many pounds of bulk tobacco stored in my basement. It stays at a steady 70 degrees, is dark and dry, and when I open a jar of 6 or 7 year old 2015, the flakes just glisten in the light from the aging.
Be sure not to put any type of aromatic/ flavored tobacco in your humidor with your premium sticks. One funky flavored stick will quickly turn all of your smokes to garbage if you store them together. If you like the occasional flavored stick, to quote the band Offspring, "You gotta keep 'em seperated"!
I have had my eye on that exact style for quite a while now. Some people don't like glass panels in humidors, but I have a glass top model that is almost 2 years old and holds humidity levels as well or better than any of my others. In fact, I trust it so much that it is where I keep all of my Cubans.
Just keep it out of direct sunlight - not good for the contents
I wouldn't keep pipe tobacco in the humidor. Heavily flavoured tobacco for the obvious reasons stated above, but mostly because it gets too moist. I've tried it over summer here (100F and 30% RH) and the results were not good. Better results were got with a sealed jar or tin shoved to the back of a bottom shelf in a cupboard behind the winter clothes.
I've tried it to rehydrate some Sunday Picnic that had got a little dry once, but the result was I had to dry it out again after few days! I doubt it was the "damp" part of the cycle but it had lost it's flavour when I tried it afterwards. I'm not convinced that cigars have less tolerance for temperature and humidity fluctuation that pipe tobacco (although it makes sense for uncut) but that seems to be case in practice.
It was the regular drinks special at a place we used to drink. I think I'll have a shot black sambuca for old times sake. Daa da da da, Daa da da da...
