What's new

My first custom brush arrived today!! ----and a future project...

Good evening gentlemen! Just a little show and tell tonight

In the mail today came a beauty of a brush, my first custom made brush! Hand turned out of cocobolo and stuffed with a 22mm Finest XH knot from TGN set to a 48mm loft. Its a LONG story but I had this made by a friend sight unseen after going over a few of my preferences. Today, a couple months after the original conversation, I saw the brush for the first time. And it turned out amazing!!

The handle itself has an awesome heft to it as the wood is quite heavy. The grain is very cool and the finish really made it pop! The way it was finished(sorry I don't know much about this) makes the handle of the brush look and feel just like it should - like wood. Not at all plasticy and its not shined to a mirror finish. It really adds quite a bit of character to it.

I have yet to shave with the brush but the knot is clearly dense(hence the XH??). I whipped up a bowl of cella for a quick test lather with it and after a rinse it has essentially no stink. Had a bit of bite while loading the soap and whipped up lather in a jiffy. It has long enough of a handle that bowl lathering was easy(I feel like my Duke 2 is just a bit too short for this). I can see that it will be a great face lathering brush as well.

Alright enough of me, here's the pics: :001_tt2:

The handle fits wonderfully in my hand

And here she is with the rest of the family. If you look closely at the grain you can make out what looks like a spider. Which is why her new name is "The Spider!!"

And here(as well as the last pic) you see my next little project, an olive wood handle with a sexy grain on it! Planning on stuffing that one with a GAS knot from TGN and setting the loft pretty short as well. I'll likely need some help with this so you all will be hearing from me

Lather and post bloom in the next post....

So what happens when you lather Cella with this brush you ask?

And a little bloom action(this brush looks so good!!):

I'd love to hear what you all think of my new addition! I'm looking forward to its first real use!

Hey Tyler, great looking brush man! Love coco bolo, it's a beautiful wood! I hope it serves you well. Also, great choice for your project with the Grade A. I'd also recommend a Super Badger knot, which is super soft and quite a lather maker!

BTW, setting a knot in a nice handle all ready for it like that is easy. Just get some of the clear two part waterproof 5 minute epoxy and mix up a bit. Then use the little applicator stick and smear some around the inside of the hole, careful to spread it evenly but not glob it in there. A nice gob on the bottom and set that knot in there! Let it set for at least 24 hrs and you will be golden my friend!

Your brush looks great, I like that you have the dark hair with the dark wood and the light hair with the light wood.

Beautiful! That olive wood handles looks amazing as well. Stunning! Nature at it's best.
I love wooden handles and decides all my future brushes have to have it, except my travel brush (which get stored away out of sight anyways).

I want that handle, it looks amazing!
Thank you thank you thank you  It's a beautiful brush with a beautiful handle! I'm glad I have something to show off to you guys now! Shave with it last night and it was very enjoyable. Lathers easily and is comfortable on the face with a little scritch.

That handle is excellent, and the unexpected spider grain is a bonus!
Quite the bonus! The brush has many different faces, I'm discovering, but that's my favorite side of it so far.

Here's an angle or two more, with an update of what she looks like after 5 shaves:

I'm also discovering that the knot really knows how to tear up some soap. Went for some bowl lathering today(which is very out of character for me) and it does an awesome job in the bowl as well.

Thats a really beautiful brush, congrats.

I of all people should know this one, but what is a GAS knot?

I'll likely need some help with this so you all will be hearing from me

There are plenty of us that enjoy setting and tuning knots, so I for one look forward that day.

It's a grade A silvertip knot from TGN. Although I'm starting to think I might use it for a different project that I have in mind and go to a best or finest knot for the olive wood handle. But we will see I suppose. And I'm looking forward to that day as well!!
