What's new

My first antique find!

I read you know you're a wetshaver when.... And the next day I went 'Antique shopping' oh how fun it was to tell my friend that. I'm 20.. I just went antique shopping. I don't know what I was looking for.. razor, maybe a brush. Came away with a stand. $22, it was 30% off... So $15! Only the brush was included. I hate it. I think it came off a porcupine instead of a boar. I gently tugged on the knot and it came off!

I already have a tweezerman... An upgrade would be swell. The handle from the feel of it is nice. It weighs a ton, I would have to say ceramic. Heavy duty. Would it make for a good brush? I have the handle now I need a knot. Any suggestions? And how would I do it?

Congrats!

Looks like a sweet set up.
That is a nice looking handle!.

You can buy badger knots at the Golden Nib

http://www.thegoldennib.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5_9

Many guys from here buy there.

Basically, you must measure the hole in the handle, and decide the loft before you buy.

Then it's a metter of cleaning the gunk out of the hole in the handle and using a marine epoxy to set the new knot in.

There are several threads where guys have pictured what they did on their own refurbishments.

Do a little reading here, and ask some questions, especially of your Forum Steward jkh, he's a great guy and has more knowledge of brushes in his pinky than I do in my entire body.

Good luck!

And don't worry about that young guy antique shopping stigma thing - A smart guy gets a bargain wherever it lies, even in an antique shop.

Sweet find! I hope to find a stand at some point. There's a certain satisfaction from finding something in an antique shop that you don't get when buying new stuff.

You're lucky if you can go antique shopping. There's only one store where I live.
Nice find. It's fun isn't it

Maybe find a woman who likes antiquing too...

What an awesome date that would be.. Though, Florida is the retirement capital of the world.. Or atleast it seems. I will hit them all up before I leave in 3 months

Though how would I measure to find the right knot? Currently I have the knot in front of me... I'm measuring that as I cant find the handle at this point in time. I'm currently set on 19mm and 21mm. And... the diameter I would assume? Any sure fire way of getting the right size. As I'm more so leaning on 21mm for the handle (i found it)...The knot is 21mm as well.

And also when I do decide on a knot size. Quite frankly what kind should I get. I'm assuming that my current Tweezerman is a Pure Badger. So, Best, Super, Silvertip, Silvertip Grade A.

Is it granite? If so I have the same set. Mine was missing the bowl, but had a razor. My knot came out with a tug too, but shattered the edge of the handle on the way. I epoxied it back together and ground it open with a dremel and stuck the 23mm Nylon badger from TGN in there. If you didn't want to dremel it out, I'd go with a 20 or 21mm boar, synthetic, or very stiff grade of badger, since there isn't enough depth in the handle (only about a cm) to set the loft at a level needed (in my opinion) to produce a decent badger brush.

I don't know much.. And for as heavy it is... It feels like granite. It also feels like a reactive resin like a good bowling ball is made off. And yeah, it's about 1.5cm. I didn't realize that it needed a depth to require a good badger. Mine didn't have a razor.. That's just my parker. And I guess it's sad, I was looking forward to having a silvertip badger brush for less than $30..

Get a dremel and a grinding drum and start grinding down. There's a little blob of resin or adhesive in the center of mine... it stinks because of that, but otherwise it's not particularly challenging.

Oh, in Florida? Finding a woman who likes antiquing might land you with someone three times your age. Danger, Will Robinson!
