What's new

My fiance said YES!

So, I'm getting married in exactly 8 days from today! I've convinced my fiance to let me begin wet shaving, as long as its not before the wedding (something about not wanting pictures of me cut up on the big day).
I've read around the forums to get a good idea of a nice beginner set-up and have an idea of what to get for a razor and brush, a Merkur HD & Omega boar brush. Past that idea I don't have a clue of what I need or what to get for soaps, creams, aftershave, razors, and so forth. It's actually slightly overwhelming with all the choices.
With my limited budget I'm really waiting for a good starter kit to come up in the B/S/T forums, but as a newbie what else do I need for a great shave (besides the razor and brush)? Aftershave? Preshave? What brands/types would you recommend for soaps/creams and anything else?
Sorry for my newness :001_smile

Hi,

Welcome aboard, You can pick up some great cheap razors in drugstores and on the BST here, I use the BST section for my blades :D I started with a Wilkinson Classic, but equally good for beginners is the Boots 3.69 razor :D Can't go wrong really. Read the how to's, watch Mantic and you'll do fine.

TBH to begin with a cheap brush, some soap or cream, proraso, palmolive, erasmic etc. etc. (My favourite soaps are L'occitane, and Wilkinsons blue tub, that face lathers well).

So go buy, and enjoy ;-) Your local chemists may surprise you, now you're specifically looking.

ATB,
Tom

Wow, congratulations. Here are some things you might want to consider getting:

Razor: Used Gillette. Some can be had for under $10 and others aren't much more.

Brush: Any Omega or Rooney's best badger. Omegas are great boar brushes and the Rooney is only $40

Shaving cream/soap: VDH soap from Walmart is great. Proraso/C.O. Bigelow is also great.

Aftershave: Aqua Velva, Clubman, Brut, and Old Spice can be had at reasonable prices and they work well.

Congrats and congrats!

Razor - the HD is a fine choice
Brush - Omegas are great boar brushes and an excellent value
Blades - you are going to need to get razor blades. Get yourself a sampler pack which allows you to try out several different types of blades.
Cream/soap - the sky is the limit and there are many choices. If you live in the US you can usually find Williams mug soap or Van Der Hagen soap in stores. Kiss My Face cream is also quite available in health food type stores. Proraso cream is another good choice for a cream, which is also available as C.O. Bieglow Shaving cream at Bath and Body Works. There are too many other options to list here, but these are good products at a nice price point.
Aftershave - Aqua Velva is an extremely good aftershave that is readily available and cheap to boot.
Pre-shave - A hot shower or hot towel. Personally, I think pre-shave oils are a waste of money.

Good luck and have fun! And welcome to B&B!

Congrats on your impending nuptials. There are plenty of good and inexpensive options available to you for a great shave. It really depends on whether you want to buy some products online or buy products that are available locally. Best bet might be to mix and match online and local products to put together a quality shave kit that will keep the future missus from getting mad at you too early. Wait til after your married to really start working on your ADs.

Welcome to B&B and congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I echo what others have already stated above, but I will stress getting a smapler pack of razors. People have different preferences and choosing one alone when starting off may lead to disappointment.

So what are you more excited about, getting married or starting wet shaving?

Congrats On Getting Married !!!
The guys are already giving you great advice!! But stick around for the post party for after you get your supplies and you start wet shaving and have questions or if you run into a problem.

Congrats! You better hurry and get the stuff. Maybe hit up some flea markets, get some barbicide and scrubbing bubbles. Eight days isn't a lot of time, considering the stuff has to get to you.
