What's new

My DE89L arrived today

My Edwin Jagger DE89L arrived today. It's a gorgeous razor and I've just completed my first with shave with it. To more directly compare it with my old Krona that I've recently returned to DE shaving with, I loaded the 89L with a new Wilkinson Sword blade like I've been using in the Krona. The 89L gave me a very close and comfortable shave, but it is definitely a less aggressive razor than the Krona.

So far I'm pleased. I like the quality and heft of the 89L. I just wish it had a longer handle.

That's surprising, unless your Krona is the metal-tipped version. That one I've found to be more aggressive than the plastic-tipped.

The EJ DE89L is a great razor :thumbup1: and one that I have in my rotation also. I also enjoy using my Schick Krona. But I found that the EJ was slightly more aggressive than the Schick.

The Edwin Jagger DE 89 is a truly fantastic razor. The Chrome finish is unbeatable, the building quality is amazing and the overall performance is second to none. This is surely one of the finest modern Double Edge shavers on the market today.

Shaving with my new EJ DE89L this week.

Yes, it is one beautiful razor.

And it is slightly more aggressive than my Schick Krona.

Maybe I should have said the 89L is "more forgiving" rather than "less aggressive." I can definitely tell today that it gave me a closer shave than the Krona.

Still loving my DE89 here too. I agree with the short handle sentiment though. A Cooncat Bob XL black aluminum ultralite handle cured that issue perfectly.

I find that a Feather is by far my favorite blade with that razor, whereas there's not such a disparity in blade preference with my other razors.

I own two DE89's, one for home the other in my travel kit.

Hopefully the original poster will get used to the razor handle length. My initial complaint was the handle was a bit slick when wet. Now I keep a wash cloth nearby to dry it and other razors off.

Couldn't agree more...:thumbup1:

I have to confess.

I love my DE89L, but...... I have this problem, and--- well--- it's like this, see?

I am always late for work when I use it...

I just get mesmerized by the chrome. I gingerly remove the blade after shaving with it, and spend eons wiping it off and cleaning it up, and looking at my reflection, and wiping fingerprints off, and staring at it like it's going tell me the meaning of the universe.

So, I don't shave with it very often. I just have it in a stand on a table where I can admire my precious...

No one says it better than Marco.

After seeing this thread, I pulled my EJ 89L out of the drawer, loaded it up and used it. It was the first razor I purchased when I started DE shaving again this year after about 35 years of cartridges. I had since moved on to vintage Gillettes, but, boy oh boy, that 89L is a really nice smooth shaving razor! It is no longer forgotten, and definitely back in the rotation.

I have the DE89L and love it. Then I bought the Muhle R89 (thinking I was upgrading) which is almost the same razor slightly heavier yet so similar! Its amazing how close these two are to each other in terms of likeness. I've read that they have the same head. Yet cost is nearly double for the Muhle R89. When I went to the Muhle website I saw the Edwin Jagger as a product line! I wish I knew this before buying the R89 although its a lovely razor as well!

Look closely at the Muhle web site. They are the exclusive distributor of EJ products in German-speaking countries. I think Muhle makes the heads for some EJ razors, but they don't make EJ razors. They are made by EJ in England. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the final polishing and plating of the Muhle heads destined for EJ razors is done by EJ in Sheffield.

In fact, Muhle is cheaper here in Amsterdam via the webshop in Germany than the EJs.
EJs are like 65-100 euros whereas the Muhle classic DE like the 101, 106, 89 and 41 are 29 euros.

I recently saw a Dunhill shop in Amsterdam selling these, I shall have a look what the street price of these razors is.
This site list them at 20 GBP.

Strange prices.
Yet wonderful, excellent razors.

You could sell one or the other on the B/S/T since they are essentially the same razor. Then you could use the funds to buy a another razor that is actually different in some substantial way (TTO, open comb, adjustable, etc).
