What's new

My cheapest shave.and my best.

I cannot believe it, but the shave I just took 2 days ago was the closest and smoothest yet. And each element of the shave was among my least expensive.

1] Merkur 11C (and Crystal blade) -bought new, NOS. ($36)
2] Semogue LE 2011 Bristle 2 (was pricey for a boar but much less than my Simpsons) (~$75)
3] Arko-$3

I kid you not, my moustache stubble was hardly coming out 24 hours later; however, my goatee area was a little further ahead. I don't have a dense beard, but I do have a reasonably rapid growing beard. This is quite a result for me. The 11C is mild and smooth to point that I don't even think you can cut yourself. Why on earth Merkur discontinued it I'll never understand.

Money and a good shave are hardly related; one of my nicest shaving razors is a sub $10 Lord, my cheapest Omega (the 10019 for about $5) lathers like a champ and soaps like Cella, P.160, Arko and Palmolive (and let's not forget Williams despite all negative comments) all deliver great lather and often even better than a lot of luxury shaving soaps.

You can save money when wetshaving but somehow curiousity interferes with economics in this hobby. But there is no need at all to spend more to get a better shave for sure!

Arko for $3?!?! You were ripped off! :biggrin1:

I'm with you. I've used a old Gillette ajustable picked up for free a VDH brush and the VDH pink soap for over 3 years. Blades were a bulk pack for something like $.10 a blade. However I've picked up a razor or two and a brush or two also. Nothing wrong at all with the VDH brush after about a year of use there was no hair loss at all. Truth is the VDH brush is a damn fine brush after it gets some good use on it. Not sure why it gets a bad rap on the net. The VDH soap also is a very good soap and even a good deal better than some higher priced stuff I've gotten over the net. And for blades bulk packs over the net can't be beet. But for a razor unless your lucky it is going to cost some coin. :)

Yep you can save money if you stay off B&B it infects you with shopitist. I am at 46 well stocked on blades and soaps for the next 8-10 years since I shave everyother day. AS and Smell Goods are another question.

It's funny how once we have hoarded everything under the sun in terms of wet shaving hardware and software, we are more impressed by the best value a product can give us. Congratulations TeddyBoy! I think we should all post great shaving combos no matter what the $$$.

I've put together a kit of cheap gear for travelling. I find it works just fine even in less than ideal conditions and wouldn't break my heart if I lost it.

Weishi razor
Tesco own brand DE blades
L'occitaine synthetic brush
Palmolive stick

My most beloved razor is less than $2 (Gillette 7 o'clock razor we get in India) and the Super Platinum blades (~$1 for 7 blades...5+2free).
Absolutely love them!

I prefer my Palmolive shave stick to my Martin de Candre. Go figure.

+1. MdC was just sort of...meh. Hated the smell too. Arko beats it hands down for me. (running for cover!). Congrats TeddyBoy on the most excellent, and inexpensive shave!

Really great suggestions Guys! Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping we get more suggestions from the other B&B members.
