What's new

My awaited delivery and a cream question.

I started wet shaving about two months ago. I have the badger brush, AoS Unscented Cream, pre-shave oil, after shave balm, and today I took the step and ordered my first DE razor. I've been using a gillette fusion. I ordered the Merkur HD and a pack of 100 Derby blades. Thats probably too many but I couldn't resist the 9 dollar price for all those blades. The razor was $38. The problem now is that i'm running out of my AoS shaving cream and I'm not sure what to replace it with when the time comes. Any recommendations? I heard good things about Trumper's and T&H. But are they really worth the $30 price tag plus shipping? And how are shaving sticks? Thanks in advance.

I LOVE the Edwin Jagger shaving creams, and they are all pretty affordable. Speick cream is unbelievably good for the price, as is the Kiss My Face line. Proraso is a must-have for the new wet-shaver.

Wow you ran out of a whole tub of AoS cream? Assuming it's a tub/tube. You're a generous shaver, aren't ya!

I would go simple with some soaps or middle of the road costs creams. Taylor of old street creams can be around $15 shipped for a full 5oz and they're superb performers. Or tabac at around $14 or less shipped per puck. Or MWF for around $14 or less. Or better yet, mama bears for about $10 shipped.

If you're looking for creams--go with something like TOBS, or if you want to spoil yourself, go with some GFT or T&H.

Ya I have been using a little too much cream then I should. It's been two months and i'm a little more than half way done with it. Thanks for the answers so far everyone keep them coming.

Hate to cut in but i'm new to shave creams and am looking to get The Bluebeards' revenge. Anyone got any ideas on it?
I've heard good things about it, but the price seems a little steep. what's AoS?

Trumpers, T&H, TOBS are both fine creams and both do samples. I'd pick up some sample sets and see what you like most. There are some other cream makers who also offer samples though I dont know any others off the top of my head. Proraso is a great cheaper cream, and is well worth a try.

what's AoS?

Art of Shaving

They make great shaving creams and soaps, but IMHO the rest of the line is not worth the money. AoS gets a lot of flack here for high prices, ignorant salespeople, and pushing multi-blade cartridge razors (they are now owned by Proctor & Gamble). In my opinion many of those criticisms are justified, but their shaving cream and shaving soap are nonetheless well worth trying..

As mentioned before the Poraso is a good one to grab and if you are looking for convenience C O Bigelow stocks it in their stores under their label for about $10. My personal favorite cream is TOBS St James which can be had for about $14.

Ahh, Art of Shaving. Should have seen that one. Cheers, Obsessed. I've tried their oils and creams. The scent is quite nice, but i haven't really had the chance to compare them to any other product in that price range yet.

+1 on the C O Bigelow! :001_smile

If you want to try some small-batch cream/soaps, many B&B members (myself included) have been impressed with My Time Bath & Body(producer of the world's most powerful menthol cream) and Queen Charlotte Soaps, made by a B&B member.

Also, if you have an Indian grocery in your neighborhood, stop in and look for Godrej DeLuxe. Its cheap as dirt and smells wonderful. Vi-John is another effective Indian cream, but the scent is a bit lacking.

There are so many fine creams out there: TOBS, GFT, T&H, Proraso, Godrej, Gillette, Palmolive ------I could go on. Just take a look at the review section of this great forum.

Do this:

  1. Get a sampler of Trumper for about $5.00
  2. Get a sampler of Truefitt & Hill for about $10.00
  3. Get Proraso (also known as CO Bigelow, can be found at Bath and Body Works). Most people love it.
  4. Get VDH Soap at most drug stores
  5. DO NOT GET WILLIAMS SOAP!!
  6. Scan the BST's for good deals. You really can't go wrong with Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Truefitt & Hill (known as the "3 T's") or DR Harris in a scent that sounds delicious
  7. Get a sampler pack of blades. I love Derby blades, and a lot of people do, but the chances that you picked your favorite blade on the first try are pretty slim. Look for, at a minimum, Red Israeli, Dorco, Lords, and Feathers.
  8. Just in case didn't read the above thoroughly, DO NOT GET WILLIAMS SOAP!!

Most important, have fun!!! This can seem overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

And Williams only cost a buck... you might as well give it a try. :001_smile

+10 good advice. Samplers are the way to go when you just start out. The T&H sampler is 2 shaves per. There were definately 2 or 3 that I did NOT care for.

The last thing you want to do is shell out bucks on a full size tub only to find out you can't stand the scent. :blushing: Scents are such a personal thing...

Finally! Someone recognizes that GFT and T&H are more expensive than AoS.

Try some Taylors- very good creams at a nice price.

Shave sticks are soap. That's an entire new world all by itself.

Vi-John is another effective Indian cream, but the scent is a bit lacking.

I had my first shave with Vi-John this morning. Great shave but the scent, or should I say smell, was quite off-putting. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what the smell is like, but "wet dog" comes to mind.

Maybe I got a bad batch as far as scent goes..............P U!!
