What's new

My armpits are on fire.

Received an Old Spice set for Christmas that came with a stick of Old Spice deodorant. It smelled good, and I thought what the heck.

Now my armpits are on fire. Painful red rash, looks like a chemical burn under my arms. Rash is so bad my skin has broken open in several places.

Anyone with even moderately sensitive skin should watch out for the Old Spice deodorant sticks, they contain pure hell-fire.

I found this too trying OS stick for the first time, but it was mild and after only a couple of days' use it was fine. I think it may have alcohol in it, so you're quite right, sensitive pit people beware.

But it works, and smells nice and fresh forever - unlike the AS which is awful.

I put up with Mennen and a couple of other sticks for years, and none worked, beyond deodorising; so I assumed I had naturally sweaty pits and many a trashed work shirt. This stuff is a keeper for me.

I got a similar reaction using a Tommy stick. What I realized is the scent portion is what was burning my skin, I kept using it for about a week and the sting did diminish but I set it aside and now use a crystal product. No more burn and a lot less chemicals.

I am very sensitive under my arms, and when I lived in Germany I used Speick Deodorant, the spritzer version. Since I am here in the US, I have had a long search for some deodorant that does not irritate me. I finally found it, and it is the only one I use now for years: Old Spice High Endurance Pure Sport!

This experience is similar to mine. I too use it regularly after having some minor initial discomfort.

This is news to me. I didn't realize they used deodorant in Germany.

+1 on the OS High Endurance deodorant.

I am sensitive to many random dyes and perfumes, even the wrong laundry detergent causes this kind of a reaction. It is not fun. Crystal deodorant is the only deodorant I've found that I can use.

The title of this thread sounds like a cheesy pick up line, but what the heck. My SpeedStick does this to me every so often (like once a month though not quite as bad as you described) and I have no idea why. It burns for a while and then is fine. Weird.

Have a Dr. appointment for this afternoon, in fact. Skin is starting to come off my pits in chunks, leaving raw flesh underneath. Embarrassing to miss work over burning armpits, but this is ridiculous and becoming unbearable.

I've had mild reactions to deodorant before but never anything like this.

Keep us updated, this sounds nasty - you may have a bad reaction to one of the ingredients.
I have had my share of skin reactions due to changes in laundry detergent and the like. My worst was when I was in South Africa some 15 years back and had all my laundry done in the hotel. My whole body was covered in small pustules, itchy and whenever I scratched, it got worse. It stopped within a day or two after I got back home and wore clothing that was washed in my detergent. Even my doctor had no idea first. I finally figured it out after I wearing shirts and underwear that were still washed in SA, as soon as I wore them, I got the reaction back. My have been something in the detergent. From this time on, my skin is very sensitive reacting to any changes in laundry detergent.

Doc took a look at my pits and concluded it was 2nd degree chemical burns. Prescribed a ten-day round of antibiotics due to the breaks in the skin and exposure of raw flesh beneath.

Holy cow, had no idea that reactions to deodorant could be this bad. No more Christmas deodorant for me. Next year the Old Spice set will be returned unopened. :thumbdown

I've never been able to use a straight deodorant for the intense burning reasons discussed here. The only things that have ever worked for me are antiperspirants (something different in their chemical makeup) & crystal.
