What's new

My Above The Tie "System"

Just got my Atlas "system" as Stan calls it and it really is a thing of beauty. I have been using the H1 exclusively since the day I got it and I was on the pre order list so I have enough experience with it to say with conviction its the best razor I even had (and I have had a lot) Let me tell you that since the H1 I have sold my collection off, expect for a couple of Ikons and a Feather, and they will be on the way soon as well. So why did I buy the combo? Simple, what you have is a complete system and I really like that. You know the R to change off once in a while from the H and as Stan suggested the M for those days when I need a PM shave. Tomorrow I will put a new feather in the R1 and report back but I'm sure its going to be a keeper like the H1................one more thing........MADE IN THE USA AND TOP QUALITY!! LOVE THAT

I was curious about the R plate.

The h1 is a bit more than I can handle. I will be listing it tomorrow on BST.

Here are the blade gaps of the system's base plates: H1=.036”, R1=.023” and the M1=.010”. They seem to offer a good range of settings for all preferences. I am really looking forward to trying all the handle/plate combinations. I am truly impressed with Above the Tie's system offerings. I have ordered some of their soaps as well. All are high quality, locally-made products.

I thought those blade gaps would be larger. I'll have to measure my Feather AS and R89.

Hey C what Razor blade did you use with the Titan H1 ? I dont like aggressive Razors or Crazy about OC's but one thing i can say is that the Titan H1 and a Fresh Polisilver is My dream Combo, one pass with the Grain and i'm clean cut, 2 Pass WTG & ATG its BBS 3 Pass WTG, XTG, ATG and its SBBS, "Silky Baby Butt Smooth" I'm still Debating on getting the Atlas System I really dont think Anything is going to top the Atlas, but then again ill be left with never knowing if it could be better then the H1 :eek:/

I'm also curious to know what blades others are liking with their H1. I had excellent results with a Med Prep. Tried a Gillette black, which was very nice for the first shave and terrible on the second shave.

Haven't tried Polsilvers yet - need to get some. Would those be the Super Iridiums?

I've got some Astra SPs and some Feathers on hand. Will be trying those in the days to come. I liked the Feathers in my Slim, even on higher settings, so we'll see what I think of them in the H1.

Also, I just received my Atlas handle today. Very curious to see how different it feels compared to the Titan handle. I do love the look of the Atlas.

Sorry, gents, i never said that i have tried the Titan. i said that i have wanted to. You must have misread the post.

I found that Perma-Sharps offered me the best combination of sharpness and smoothness, and Med Preps a close second in the H1.

R Plate: This morning I had my first shave with the R or regular plate of the ATT System, first let me say I only use Feather blades in any razor, if you like to cook. then you know its safer to use a sharp knife and I find shaving the same so its always a Feather blade for me. The R plate is noticeably different from the H plate you will never have to wonder what plate your using but I still got a great shave doing my usual 2 pass method. As much as I love the H this R plate is really nice, I think the M plate may only be used for the days when I need a 2nd shave in the evening. I just want to add that I really love the Atlas handle, I like shorter handles and used a bulldog with my Titan rather than the Titan handle but this Atlas for me gives the ATT head perfect balance. Just to sum it all up I love the H plate and have since I first got it, but this ATT system is really perfect for me its the only thing I will shave with and will be selling off what is left of my collection

Thanks for your initial impression of the R plate. What I'm wondering is if you received razor burn from the R plate. I had the best shaves of my life with the H1, but it left me with searing razor burns. If it shaves as well without the razor burn, I will be putting in an order for the Titan Set myself.

I only have the H1, so I can't speak to the differences with the R1 base plate, but I do have a thought: The Titan is the heaviest razor I've ever used. I noticed from my first shave that I had to be very careful in the way I held it so it would just glide over my skin. It's very easy to put pressure on the head without even realizing it because of the weight. Is it possible that the razor burn was cause by the weight and not the larger blade gap of the H1? If so, then switching to the R1 base plate might not make a difference. It might be more a matter of slightly changing your technique and the way you hold the razor to get a burn-free shave.

I also just received the Atlas handle yesterday and will be shaving with it this morning. I'm curious to see how different the H1 head feels with the lighter handle. I can report back later on my results.

Its different for everyone but I got some irritation with the H when I first started using it but I found less pressure and slower shorter strokes took care of that but the R plate is more forgiving

Actually after using the H1, my technique has gotten much better. However, even with those improvements, the H1 is still too aggressive for me. I think I'd use it once in awhile when I need that absolute BBS shave. But glad to know that the R1 is more forgiving. Once I hear more reviews, I will be putting in an order soon. The Atlas handle looks great.

@Nick Danger, Its just the Regular Polisilver.

A word of advice for all, Dont get stuck on a single brand blade Like a Feather, not every blade works great with every razor or even your face.

The Art of finding the perfect shave is Finding The Perfect Razor and blade combo that work for You, Also prep plays a roll as well but thats beside the Razor and Blade Combo.

For me Feathers are a bit to harsh and sharp for the Titan H1 Feathers work well in some Razors but not in all Razors :eek:/ . As always YMMV .

My recent experience suggests you are exactly right about finding the right razor / blade combination. I never liked Med Preps in my Slim, 34c or other razors. In the Titan / Atlas H1, they are superb. Still haven't pulled out a Feather blade because the Med Preps have been working so well. I plan to try the Personna Labs next since many people seem to indicate they are about the same as Med Preps (but cheaper.) I also plan to try the Astras, which I put aside when I started using Feathers in my Slim.

I'll seek out some Polsilvers and some other brands to test in the Titan, too. I had mixed experiences with Gillette Blacks, which were great for the first shave and lousy for the second.

Well I have now used all the base plates and here are my findings: All of us who have the H1 know it is aggressive but a great shaving razor and I still love it. I really like the R1 as well and lastly I used the M1 this morning, the M1 might be perfect for those who find the Feather to mild. The M1 is fast comfortable and easy to use. You will get feedback from all the 3 plates which is another thing about the system I like as well. I also like the way the end tabs of the blade extend the head just enough to be able to hold the cap by the end when you change plates and keep the blade in place. this design also make blade changes fast safe and easy. So for me I find this "SYSTEM" of double edge shaving to be the best and the quality of the material and workmanship is second to none. Yes you will pay for it but lets just think about value rather than price, if you can afford the $300 for the complete system you will have great value for that kind of spend and something that will last for generations
