What's new

My 1st Antique Find.

Hope all is well with you & your families. Today was my very 1st antique find on safety razors. Just got home.... I purchased my very 1st straight razor and two DE razors that I hope you can help me identify.

I posted a pic in the straight razor section but I also want to share with you. The DE in the left appears to be a 1940s Gillette SS and the DE on the right looks like a Gillette New.

Am I right? I hope I can get a good cleaning with some good ole Scrubbing Bubbles.

Isn't finding things in the wild more fun?!!!

I think you have a shavette, not a complete one either. It takes half DE blades or hair shaper blades.

The 40's Superspeed is correct I'd say, but the third thing is a ball end Old Type not a New.

The third one should shine up real nice.

I can't speak to the first thing very well, as I'm not into straights.

It took some tough scrubbing, Scrubbing bubbles, boiling water, more scrubbing, and polish with Maas to accomplish a better look. It was pretty tough to get some of the dirt out. I still think I can do better but I'm gonna stop for now.

I'd say that is a very nice job. What did you use to polish the handle? I tried some Mother's polish with a toothbrush and got ok results but not the night and day difference you accomplished.

Nice find, those NDC Super Speeds are great razors.
Can you post some open bay door shots on it? there are a couple of spotting features that can help narrow down the year.
The Old Type looks to be silver plated and intact, beauty of a razor.

Thanks gents for all the responses. It was a great feeling finding something in the wild. Also... what are your thoughts on how the Old Type shaves? Is it similar to a New? Just curious and looking forward to hearing your shave reviews of the Old Type.

I like the shave that my ball end old type gives. Nice and smooth with good efficiency when I used a feather blade with it. Great job on the cleanup! It's a beaut!

I'm a fan of the NEW's, I think they're smoother but find yourself a nice blade that suits the old type and really keep an eye on the angle and you should get yourself a nice shave.

I've found the NEWs to be a bit more aggressive with their blade exposure and as such gives a more efficient but rougher cut. The Old is a very smooth shave for me by comparison, but does require more attention to angle as its exposure is much less.

Also, make sure that blade is aligned evenly on both sides when you tighten down the handle as modern blades are not a snug fit and can shift a bit from side to side if you aren't watching when you put it together.

Great job, they both came out looking awesome, well done!!
The Old Types are great shavers, I like a good sharp blade (Feather, Super Iridium etc)
