On the tube it says it's a brushless cream but a lot of people still recommend using one with Musgo. I have used a brush and a mug the first couple times trying to get the lather right but have been struggling. Any suggestions/tips on the best way to use this cream?

It's a thirsty cream. I tend to lather it in a mug and then get the lather where I want it by dipping the brush in water and face lathering. Never tried brushless.
I've used it both with and without a brush. Works fine both ways. In either case, its very thirsty, as lopenzani mentioned, so use plenty of water. I find that MR shaves best when applied with a sloppy-wet consistency, and let it soak into the whiskers for a minute or two.
I get better results with the brush.

I use a brush and a bowl, and LOTS OF WATER!!! This is my post-swim go to shave cream. A great re-hydrator.
Good timing. I just hauled my tube and used it the past couple of shaves. My usual method is to shake out my brush pretty well, then add back a few drops at a time as needed. I put a dab in my scuttle and began mixing. Nothing! Began adding in a drop or two of water at a time. After a few of those I just went ahead and put in several drops at once. As others have already stated - turns out it need quite a bit of water.
The end result is well worth the effort though. It might just be my top performing soft cream.

I don't think I have a single soap or cream where that last bit doesn't improve the over all experience. Sometimes I'm pressed for time, but when I can let the stuff sit on my whiskers for a little while, the shave is much easier.

Thanks for the tips guys! I used it today and it was everything I wanted it to be
I guess I will swim a little up stream on Musgo Real, it always seemed to work best for me brushless. Always gave me a fine shave, the scent was never a real pleaser for me but the results kept it in contention. When some openings appear in the drawer I will look to add their Lime Basil and Oak Moss shave creams but for now the pattern is full.
I use a brush for the first pass or two and apply the remaining lather with my fingers. Enables me to feel whiskers needing follow up.
