What's new

Muhle Black Fiber

I'm interested in the new Muhle Black Fiber brush. I've heard that the older HJM, with a longer loft was a little weak in the backbone department. Is the new shorter lofted V2 much of an improvement? I had a Muhle STF that was a great brush but I sold it. Eventually, I'll have another... or maybe a black fiber. Thanks.

I have the Muhle Rytmo 50/21mm, I wouldn't call it floppy or stiff but moderate in Backbone, not much of an answer but each of use has a different base-line when determining what we prefer.

With the exception of two Badgers @ 50mm, my two Horses, six Badgers and Silver-Fibre Brushes are @48mm and below, giving them an above average to firm backbone, and the two @50mm are firmer than my Black Fibre.

I bought my Muhle here http://connaughtshaving.com/21m223.html

Here's my Black Fibre next to my Shavemac Silver-Tip, both are 50mm lofts, the Muhle handle is 2" tall & the Shavemac's 1 7/8".

+1 I agree with mftoms59 completely. I've owned over 30 synthetic brushes to date. and will say that the V2 fibers in the RYTMO and VIVO lines (and the new hjm brush available through Muhle/Germany) have more backbone than the V1 brushes. They are machine made, and therefore will never have the backbone of a hand-built V2 brush.

Even though they are mid-density, they are terrific performers with any soap/cream you throw at them. And it's very hard to beat the softness of the tips with any other brush on the market!

Ooh, I see more expense on the horizon! I have the white version of the one in the photos above. Bought it a year or so ago direct from Muhle and I've hardly used any of my "better" badgers since.

Didn't know they had a new version of the black fibre so off to the Muhle website forthwith...

Thanks, I got rid of my STF and I new it was a mistake but figured I could always make another. STF pictured on the right, Shavemac finest on the left. It was a great brush. I've always wanted to try the black fiber so I guess now is as good a time as any. If I don't like it as it is, I'll probably drop the loft a little.

Been on the Muhle website and nothing says it's a new version. Have I missed something?

Yes. This has been discussed in other threads. I discovered and wrote about the new V2 Black Fibre after getting my custom Kosmo several months ago (pictured above).

I also found that all VIVO and RYTMO brushes (new lines) had the V2 Black Fibres. Since these are new lines, all vendors offering these brushes stock the V2 fibre brushes. Lastly, the HJM line now has the V2 BF, but only MUHLE has a reliable supply currently. If you want to order an HJM V2, order direct from MUHLE and indicate "V2 ONLY) in the order note field.

Fibre Brush

Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
thank you for your e-mail.
We have recently worked on smaller improvements of the fibre and launched the V2 version of the material. We improve the softness of the tips without affecting the backbone of the bundle. The fibres are slightly thinner which helped to improve the density of the brush bundle. We are now offering all shaving brushes with the latest V2.

Thanks for that Codfish. Time to order then!

Think it will be a VIVO as I already have the RYTMO shape and love it. Sure it wasn't called that when I bought it a year or so ago though!
