Moonwalking over my score: A Double Ring

It's been a pretty good day today for me because I scored my first Double Ring on the bay! It's a 1905 Double Ring and it will sail to the shores of Singapore in the next couple of weeks. Here are the pictures from the auction:

The razor set:

The case & blade container. The case is in impeccable condition inside out for its age:

The one flaw; a small crack at the top of the handle, which is acceptable for a razor this old and some brassing in the open comb ends. To borrow Mark1966's line, I'm sure we all will have a crack or two at 107 years old:biggrin1::

What attracted me to this set was its case, which is in very good conditon and the exterior leatherette is not torn at all!

And this holy grail razor finally puts my RAD in control:001_cool:

Beautiful, nice grab.
Between this and the recent "big fellow" BIN auction I am beginning to think I must be partially blind when cruising the 'bay.

been wondering for a long time what makes it a "double ring". If I saw one in the wild how would I know it's a double ring and valuable?

A very nice pick up. That case, in particular, looks like it's in beautiful shape. I would say that those cardboard blade boxes, though, are a later replacement. The Double Ring and earlier Single Rings would have come with cardboard sleeves that were open at one end. As far as I know, that particular style with the separate lid is from the second half of the Old Type's run. Here's a 1920 Standard Set that I have with them:

And here's a catalog page from 1914 showing them:

Great pickup!

I'm not seeing any of these sweet deals in my searches at the moment

Glad it went to a great guy though :thumbup1:

The one on the right is a double ring. Look under the head of the razors. The double ring was the first razor design patented by Gillette, and it didn't last long. It was replaced by the single ring version which was around forever.

Very nice buy! I was watching it to see what it went for. Great deal, great set. I'm envious and happy for you at the same time!

Thanks! +1 to my razor identification skill

Excellent score, congrats!!!!
Agree that the case is in really nice condition, and that the blade boxes are not correct for the set...we will both be looking for the "Sharp" "Dull" ones
Here is a 1920 single ring that I have with those boxes

I'm glad I decided not to bid on that one! Congrats!

Congratulations!

Thanks Domminigan, celestino, facetime & rxonmymind! I'm still dizzy after winning this set:blush:

Congratulations! Uh, what did you pay for it?
Thanks santamariasteve. I paid 182.50$ for it. Good deal I think, given that these sets in our very own B/S/T go for no less than 200$!
