What's new

Mitchell's Wool Fat-3 months later.

I have to say that I had very positive first impressions using MWF, but after nearly 3 months of daily use My opinion has wavered. My first impressions of MWF were of a soft scent that was not offensive, amazing thick lather that did an amazing job at softening my skin. I assume that this was due to the lanolin, but the why isn't so important.

Pros-- The most common complaint I heard was that MWF is difficult to lather, but with my super soft water I had zero difficulty. It was easy to bring the lather flowing fourth, whipping it up in generous and thick amounts that would leave my skin feeling soft.

Cons-- Though it does a great job at leaving my skin soft, it does a poor job at protecting it. Though it is a slick soap with a lot of cushion, there is some reason that after my shaves my upper lip always has tiny spots of blood due to insensible cuts. Also, If I shaved every day my face did not have enough time to heal and I would invariably get razor burn on the 3rd day on. No matter how softly I handled my razor, or zero pressure I used, I would still cut myself and invariably get razor burn.

After aproximately 3 months of only using MWF, I got some Art of Shaving unscented cream and got the most amazing BBS shave with no cuts or razor burn so it made me try other soaps. I got incredible shaves with AOS unscented cream, Cella, and Arko...but for some reason am completely unable to obtain the same shaves with MWF. I have gotten a couple decent shaves, but nothing that has left me feeling my face in awe afterwards. MWF is an amazing soap on paper, but for some reason it just is not able to live up to the hype once I tried other soaps. I do say that the best part of using MWF exclusively for 3 months was that It helped me learn a lot about how to lather soaps, and also helped to understand how much difference a brush makes while lathering.

I found MWF will produce beautiful "looking" and lasting lather easily. I also found when I loaded beyond that point by a good margin that it became an awesome lather. It was like night and day. The lathers looked the same and were stable but an extra 30-40 seconds on the puck paid huge dividends. I facelather BTW

lol, yeah i know huh? I was so excited with MWF when i first began using it and it was with great pain (mostly razor burn lol) that i had to decide to put it up for a while and use something else exclusively until i get to know it intimately. Once I gain more experience i'll come back and give it another go...i still have less than 1.5 pucks left...I have plenty of play time, but further down the road. :)
Why, you, ungrateful son of a ......

yeah, after about 30 seconds my lather "Looked" great, but with closer to a full minute it performed much better. I read that for people who have hard water 1 minute is a better duration to lather, but I figured just go a minute and "lather it like I hate it" and see what it'll do for me.

Yeah man Ive never tried the Fat. I just thought that I would be first and stir-the-pot before the guys come on and say blasphemy/heresy etc... LOL. That cracks me up!

just grate the MWF with some other soap mixed in and all should be good.

i have a klar kabinett and MWF mix in a bowl and its awesome times 2.

I've been using it since Christmas and I'm loving it. Really can't complain, took a few lathers to get things right but it's been pretty much plain sailing since. My staples recently have been Arko and Palmolive but I can see this being on heavy rotation for some time.

+1 on the posts about spending extra time loading--for MWF as well as for other soaps. This is my big learning breakthrough of the last few months (of my 14 months of DE shaving). Tonight, for example, my Cella lather looked and felt good after 60 seconds of loading and initial face lathering. I then loaded another 10-15 seconds, and wow!

You just need more soaps in rotation. This soap monogamy thing is pure crazy talk.
I enjoy this comment. :biggrin1: Yep, just a bunch of crazies using up soaps. It's really a lot of fun actually and you get to know the rest of your gear a lot better doing it.

The only criticism I have of your post is the difficulty that I had in reading it before adding some blank lines between the paragraphs. Try hitting the the return key an extra time before starting a new paragraph. Maybe it's just my tired eyes, but a tightly packed page of text is hard for me to read on a computer monitor.

As far as the soap goes, there is no single product that will be the bee's knees for everyone.

So far, MWF has been a good but not great soap for me. I'm going to revisit it some more before drawing any final conclusions though.

I have been using mwf more on than off lately and while I enjoy the post shave feel, my lather isn't so great with it. I have tried almost all variations. I get the same enjoyment out of cade too.

I like to add a small amount of shaving cream to my MWF lather,I have been using Speick. It has made a huge difference with the later and smells like Speick, win win.
