Microscope/loupe

Are these much use with regards to honing a straight im curious about buying one or would a simple loupe be just as effective?

I like to use a loupe when I'm honing. I like to look at the bevel to see the scratch marks going away, and to see the edge get smooth.

That's what I have. I think I would have more hones if I had a higher power loupe. It is cool to see how the edge and bevel progress as you hone.

Does it help with knowing what your edges are up to though?

It helps develop a reference to my other honing tests (HHT, etc) sometimes the edge isn't progressing as I would expect, and a peek at it under the scope helps see what is actually happening at the edge.
