I have a linen with .5mu CrOx spray and am starting to see what appears to be a metal buildup through the green. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do, or should do? Can I just clean it all off and reapply?
Someone had mentioned using a strong magnet to remove the swarf, but never heard if it worked.
As long as it still gives the results you want I don't think you have to worry. When the efficacy ones down you can trust either recoat with crox, brush it down, magnet it off, wash it, etc.
That might have been my thread from a few months back. I ordered a super-strength (neodymium?) magnet bar as some folks had recommended, and it does seem to lighten things a little bit on my paddle; but ultimately, for all the trouble, I wonder if a stiff toothbrush and a little soapy water might not be better, followed by a reapplication of the paste in question. As for linen, I suppose it depends on what one has there. The vintage stuff can be soaked in cold water w/Woolite, followed by a light scrubbing with a plastic brush, but then must be pressed with a rolling pin and weighted while drying. The newer linen strops, I've not tried in this way, but they probably would work in a similar fashion. I believe linen is much more forgiving with regard to shrinking and buckling than cotton is.
