Merkur Slant Plate Loss

Well, I took apart the razor and found plating loss in one of the areas that holds the razor blade in place. It's a nice sized little area, too. I e-mailed Merkur about this and don't plan to let them give me the "it's your water" speech considering it is three days old or so. Pretty disappointed in this.

Merkur is notorious for plate chipping. Not unusual. As long as it is not in an area that would cut or scratch you when shaving (on the bar or exterior facing areas) it is usually not much of an issue.

Contact the company you bought it from. You should be able to get another one because of the short amount of time that you have had it.

Your first contact should be with the seller/retailer

Yeah, it's a little disappointing. For the most part, Merkur's poor plating doesn't affect the shave of the razors (except for some obvious examples). It's kind of sad especially now that they have competition from other companies like Edwin Jagger, Muhle, FaTip, and Parker. The engineering of the razors is top notch except for some of the superficial aspects. I just got a 1904 not too long ago and the bottom plate has a chip under the plating (probably when the raw piece was tumbling around during the manufacturing process) and plating "waviness" from some parts of the under plate. The rest of the razor is fine and the handle is surprisingly solid. I've heard that Merkur has decent costumer service and should honor your inquiry. I'm not going to return mine but it's just one of those little things......

I noticed some flaking around the threaded screw where it attaches to the cap on my less than 3 month old slant, took photos, emailed them to Merkur, and was sent a new replacement cap quickly. Hope they respond to you likewise.

Since you have only had it a few days, you may find you have better luck and quicker service with the dealer you bought the razor from instead of Merkur.

Everyone is making it sound like (online I mean) that the plate loss will make this whole thing crumble and die in my hands. Am I over-reacting?
