Merkur Progress questions.

I bought a Merkur Progress today along with a couple of other junk items.

My first question is regarding the adjustment dial. I see there are numbers 1-5 but my razor goes all the way around again making the setting 10 if there were numbers. The dial goes around just over two times before the head is let loose. Was this meant to be for this razor, or is this razor meant to be set no higher than 5?

2nd question is in regards to cleaning. Is there a way to get the piece that sits on the spring off for cleaning or is this piece permanent?

3rd question. I pulled pretty hard on the handle and the bottom dial came off. Is pulling the bottom dial handle piece off recommended for cleaning or should that piece remain always attached?

1. If you turn the knob clockwise until the head is all the way down, it should be set at the #1 position, aligning with the dot/circle above the numbers on the handle. Once you have it there, then you can adjust it counter-clockwise up until the #5 position. You don't want to go further than that. If you do, then you are unscrewing the handle to remove it.
2. As far as i know, you can not separate the bottom-plate from the handle. It is a fixed piece.
3. The bottom knob can come off for cleaning, so don't worry about it. You can easily reassert it back in with no issue.
Here is a short video. You can find more detailed video on YouTube about it. Good luck.

To "zero out" the Progress:
When you put the razor together, make sure you have the triangle and the line on the same side.
Tighten the head by turning the knob on the bottom.

Once fully tightened, you can set the aggressiveness of your razor by aligning the dot with a number.

Your razor sounds like it's working properly. It does takes more than two full turns of the dial to fully open the razor up to take the blade out. When you put a new blade in, make sure the head cap and the base are properly lined up like in the above picture, then fully tighten down the dial. From there adjust the razor to the desired gap.

I too have one of these coming to the ranch. Keep us posted how yours works and about cleaning with the bottom dial out. Thanks

Great information from Celestino as always. Enjoy your razor, it is a wonderful shaver. Absolutely love mine.

But I wouldn't call those other items junk! :biggrin1: The Gillette Guard is a great razor for head shaving and a blade bank is useful if you didn't have one before.

Yes you can go past 5 if you really want a large gap.ajust the gap to what ever you want it. Just watch that you don't go too far and you'll be fine.

As Celestino said above...do not go past 5. After that point you are unscrewing the head from the handle and all bets are off as to how your shave will turn out. A setting of 5 is MORE than aggressive enough for any purpose.
