Merkur Open Combs

Anyone currently using one these days?

I am a huge fan of OCs and currently have in my rotation a 1924 New and a 1930s British made New with ball end. Love the BBS i get from both very much.

Really want to buy the heaviest most agressive Merkur OC for my go to razor and put the vintage G's on a shelf as conversation pieces/decorations, until they are passed along to my son in the next 10-15 years.

For you current OC Merkur users, what can you share with me about them? A preffered model? anything would be helpful. thanks ! :001_smile

I use some on a regular bases but don't think of them as aggressive, though opinions vary on this. The heaviest would be the 12C ('barberpole') but if you could pass it on to your son is debatable. The base material of a lot of modern razor-heads, including Merkur, is casted from Zamak so mostly zinc. This material is not going to last for eternity by itself because it will soon corrode when exposed to water so its life expectancy depends mostly on the quality of the plating. And the quality of the plating is not Merkur's strongest point.

You could get the same head much better finished as a Mühle R41 but that one is certainly not heavy. It has however a much better chance to withstand the years IMO.

I've got the merkur 11c for the past year or so and it's become my favourite razor. I find I get better shaves from an open comb and I can get a really good shave in two passes with this razor so I guess you could say its a fairly aggressive razor.

I know its a YMMV thing, but I find the 11c near tech-like in its mildness. I normally shave with an Gillette Old Type. When I use the Merkur, I have to work harder to get a good shave.

I keep it around to shave my head. It does a great job for me on the dome.

I love my merkur open comb. It is perfect for every day shaves and if i dont shave for a month it can still mow it all down with out having to trim. This thread needs some pics

I know you mentioned Merkur, but have you given any thought to a Cooncat Bob? The Bull Mastiff XL with a replated NEW head might be what you are after.

I have a Merkur 15C and love it. I think all the Merkur OCs have the same head design so it's just a matter of finish and handle preference. You really can't go wrong with any of them. :001_smile

I have the 25c which is the long hanle version as all the merkurs have the same head. Im currently selling mine as its a bit mild for me but other then that its a solid razor.

I have a 1904 OC and an 11C. Both are great - the 1904 is a great value IMHO. I prefer a nickel finish over chrome. The 1904 has a nickel finish. The 11C on the other hand is heavier - if that's what you prefer.
