Merkur Mergress issue

So I tried out my new Mergress last night and it delivered an excellent shave. However, while cleaning I somehow pulled out the the bottom piece (along with the knob) and now I can not get it back in place correctly. There is a little retention ring. Where is the correct position for this? I have read some older threads about but Im still having trouble with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just give the retention ring a little squeeze while reassembling the razor and it should slide right back in.

Is it supposed to go in the spot circled below?

Yes, the groove is cut out specially for the retaining ring. the ring is made of spring steel, so when re-assembling just squeeze it so as the two cut edges come together while re-inserting it into the handle. Many people, including myself, remove the ring and store it away from the razor. This is a three piece razor that is often called two piece because of the retainer ring. Without it things are a lot more clear and there is no need to fiddle with the ring every time you clean the razor, which I do after every shave. Just use it as a three piece razor and you will be happy. Things dry out a lot more readily inside the handle if the knob is out. Re-assembly without the ring is simple and intuitive. Also, if you have any other "two piece" Merkurs like 34C, 37C, etc. they too work the same way and have the same ring. I just remove the rings in those types of razors and use them as three piece units.

Good luck. Progress is one of the very best DE razors there is.

So I guess I had it right all along then. Thanks for the extra info as well. I may just remove the ring at some point, but for now I will leave it on. Thanks again for the quick replies.

If you want to clean out the handle, just pull the knob straight off. To put it back, squeeze the retaining ring and slide the knob back in.

Just curious, can the plate that the blade rests on be removed from the Progress/Mergress? I know that there is a process for removing the blade plate on the Futur.
