Merkur DE blades

Just got some Merkur DE blades for Christmas along with a Futur. What's everyone's opinion on these blades? I've had one shave with them and they seem to do the trick.

And, what's your favorite blade to use?
And........do you prefer to use one brand of blade for specific razors?

thanks

I personally didn't like them. Not sure why. Just didn't get a smooth shave out of them. Lots of people here do like them though.

Right now, my favorites are Red Personnas.
At this time, I use all my blades in all my razors.

I like em. First blades I got along with my razor. I'm still on the fence with feathers. First shave was horrible. Second feather blade was a lot better but had to trash it after two shaves. Went back to merkurs and got a more predictable shave x3 from same blade.

Horrifically overpriced. Blades that are just as good (or better) can be had for far less cost.

Most people tend to rank them as being total junk.

I found them to be sub-par, but that may be because my first few shaves with a DE we with them. I won't be trying them again either way. They're expensive and I'm enjoying Astra SP's at the moment.

I find them (and all other blades I have used) acceptable.

They are priced a little on the high size but other than that they are just razor blades :001_smile

I have around 100 of them so won't ever run out. Don't think I have used one in over 8 months so maybe it is time to break another one out soon

they seem to do the trick.

Perfect summary IMO.
I've never had a rough shave from a Merkur blade.
But then again, I've only used the free pack that came with a razor, and have no plans to pay the extravagant price for them when I can get Astra SPs at a fraction of the cost. Astras might need a lighter touch at first, but give equally good shaves when shown respect.

Frankly, they suck! Astras SPs, Personna Meds, all the Gillette ones are great, Perma Sharp Supers, Polsilvers, Super Iridiums, etcetera will give you much better shave, i believe, but you will have to find out for yourself.

i only used Merkur blades one time, with my razor when i got it. havent had any since then. i didn't think the shave was that bad, but it was a long time ago cant really remember. I honestly dont have a set blade that i use for a set razor. i have an assortment of blades and i just randomly pick one to try for the day. I generally find that if i really like a blade then i'll try it in my other razors and it does the same great job.

Now that i've finally got Proraso pre-shave and have been using that the shaves are much better. which leads me to believe beard prep is more important than blade/razor selection.

The four shaves I had with my free included blade (with a Progress) were just fine, but so were Astra, 7 O'Clock Yellow & Blue, and some others, all of which are considerably cheaper.

Just got 50 more Merkur blades for Christmas along with 100 Red Personnas. I use Merkur blades in my Merkur 34G and Red Personnas in my SuperSpeed. I like a more forgiving blade so both of these work best for me.

I like them well enough. They seem to be just as good as most of the others I have tried. My favorites are Feathers, but there's a pile of second-place finishers that are all acceptable, and Merkurs are in that pile for me. However, they are a bit expensive.

+1

At more than £0.50 (50pence) per blade, (and only just starting to test them out), but my first shave with them was awful... Loads of tugging, and weepers and not a very close shave either!, but will try a few more shaves and a couple of blades, but from the previous reviews I've seen, I'm not expecting any better, but you never know...

But at their price you'd hope for a spectacular smooth shave.

I like Dorco ST301 and Boots' own brand Israeli blades (Pretty sure they are Personnas) are quite good too (but only starting my exploration of blades).

If they seem to do the trick then they do the trick. One of the things I've learned to do here is look at the opinions in the forums for some guidance, but to make decisions about products afterwards based on my own experience, because I'm the one who has to shave with them in the morning. So for example, I have no problems with the Merkur blades apart from their price. I like Derby and Wilkinson Sword blades, dislike Astras and if it weren't for the fact I bought a bunch of Feathers, wouldn't use them because they're over-rated, as is the Muhle R41. But that's only my opinion, and others here will vehemently disagree.

In summary, you know if a shave is comfortable or not, and it's not just about the blade, it's about your preparation too - if poor, it could be blamed on the blade/razor combo. After the shave, your fingers will let you know how good it's been, along with the sensation of your skin. If a shave looks good in the mirror, it's good enough. I recently chased a shave where you simply couldn't feel any stubble whatsoever - but for me, although it was achievable, it was no fun at all.
