Hi All, Had my Merkur 41C open comb (1904) arrive yesterday and out of the box I could see a rough edge on the top plate.
I'm a bit disappointed and contemplating sending it back. What would you do?
Cornish, sorry that you received a flawed razor. Merkurs are great razors, but their quality control is not always what is should be.
You're instinct to send it back is right on.
Contact the selling merchant either attaching your excellent photo or linking to this post telling him that you're not satisfied. Ask the merchant to hand pick a razor that is problem free. Good merchants, especially in the wet shaving world, stand by their products.
One more for sending it back. IME, whenever you have a question about something that's brand new and you find a flaw that makes you question whether you should live with it, you're doing yourself and the company a disservice. You wouldn't enjoy it as much knowing that deep down that razor arrived in less than acceptable condition. Also, the company needs to know that their quality control is unacceptable (if they care at all).
Definitely send it back. That flawed area is going to be highly susceptible to plating failure. You, as the consumer should expect and receive a product in first class condition, nothing less.
Definitely send it back. It appears to be a bit of a "lucky dip" with Mekurs as to whether you get a good one or a bad one. I have two Merkurs, a 41C like yours & an 11C. Both have minor tooling scratches on the guard, under the end cap where they aren't seen. The 11C also has a couple of yellowish patches on the underside of the end cap, where I assume the chrome was applied too thinly. Even though this isn't visible when the 11C is in use, I would still have sent it back for this, as I fear it will more liable to corrosion in the lightly chromed areas. Unfortunately, as new 11Cs are as rare as rocking horse droppings, I had to buy mine from an Italian site, meaning the postage back would have been ridiculously expensive. Hearing other horror stories about Merkurs, I still think I didn't I do too badly!
I bought a 37c that had a similar issue. The spot was a little smaller than that so I just decided to keep it as is. If I were you, I would contact Merkur. Despite their quality control issues, their customer service is pretty good.
