Received my red handle Merker 38(38R??) yesterday and planned my next shave while studying my new whisker weapon in front of the tube last night.
Compared to my EJ89L the way the blade sits in the head seems much more aggressive-which is what I was looking for--I instinctively gravitated to the longer handled razors but I was new to DE shaving so went with the EJ based on the recommendations for the noob--sad to say but the EJ had only been giving so so shaves for the last month and I was always grabbing the old cart razor to do clean up work--and my face was really showing the wear. Those multiple passes with the EJ were killing me.
Don't try this at home boys and girls--this is a techique strictly for my face--use this info at your own risk.
While planning my shave--I decided to go against conventional wisdom(ATG so to speak) I went with a one pass shave ATG with minor touch ups on the neck--FANTASTIC BBS SHAVE----the shave I've been looking for all along---it was quick, easy, no nicks, cuts--PERFECT. All with the Merkur blade that came with it that everybody says is crap.
The weight of the 38 isn't what made it work for me--since I shaved from the bottom up---its the length of the handle and the ball on the end that worked for my technique that I've aquired after all those years of cart shaving.
Thinking I might have to go get another 38 to have a spare---these are simply excellent.
Does anybody else think its weird that I'm now planning my shaves ahead for the next day??
