Merkur 34c handle cracking?

I discovered a small crack on the handle of my Merkur 34c the other day. I have never dropped it or hit it against anthing. Is this normal or is it just a glitch in manufactuing?

I'll try to take it and put it up soon. I bought it from West Coast Shaving a year ago. Trying to contact them about it, haven't heard back yet.

Might just be a freak incident. the 34c is popular so if it was normal I'm sure this would be more commonly discussed. I've heard of problems(not necessarily with the 34c) with damaging the handle due too tightening the razor too much when replacing blades.

Good luck getting this remedied.

IMO, I believe it's unreasonable to expect a vendor to bear the burden of a manufacturing defect, especially one discovered after such extended use. In that case, I'd contact the manufacturer.

How would tightening the razor cause it to crack? :(

sent an email to Merkur

I'll go along with not expecting the vendor to bear the burden of a possible defect from the Co. But what harm will an email to the vendor do? I don't expect they would take care of it, given the time involved, but then they might say they will. Its worth the shot, and they might have more pull with Merkur due to their volume of business. :thumbup1:

+1

I'm not sure what the warranty is, but if the razor is over a year old, I'm pretty sure it would be expired by now.

However, both WCS and Dovo have good reputations for customer service ... it won't hurt to ask what remedies might be available.

If the razor is still usable with the crack, you've got a great BST or PIF sitting there. Even if you have to scrap the razor and buy a new one out of pocket, its not going to break the bank.

Over-tightening any metal device would cause excess stress on all the pieces, but I think the handle would be the last to fail. I think the head snapping off would be the weakest, and first point of failure.

In any case, I doubt that just using your fingers to tighten down the blade would put enough pressure on the mechanism to damage it. To generate enough torque to cause a crack to appear, I'd think you'd need to hold the handle in a vise and clamp down on the knob with a pair of channel-locks.

Yeah That's what I was implying. It's not common at all but if you place enough pressure(almost like a machine tightening something) it can cause damage. It's unlikely that was what causing the OP's problem But I threw it out there because its something i heard of.

Just to be safe I never tighten anything extremely when I use a razor because pressure is pressure and in the long run can even cause issues on things i tightened long ago. Its just better safe then sorry.
