Gentleman,
I just used my Merkur 180 with a new Feather blade for the first time. I can state with confidence I just had the best closest shave of my life with no irritation!
I started DE shaving with the Feather razor by Jatai. It was cheap, came with two Feather blades at $18 and got good reviews. It worked well to introduce me to the world of DE/Wet Shaving. However, the lightweight and non aggressive blade exposure left me wanting something better. I found myself using more pressure with the Jatai razor which led to some irritation inside my neck area.
So, I got the Merkur 180 due to the very positive reviews and decent price. I loaded up a new Feather blade and lathered up with Proraso soap. I had 2 days of growth. I let the lather sit on my face about 10min. I then splashed more very warm water on my face and applied more soap.
I was very ginger with the blade initially. My perception coming from cartridges is that it's VERY easy and common to get nicks/cuts with DE shaving. I fully expected to get little cuts every time I shaved with a DE razor and I'm not sure why I thought that, but I did.
I started applying the slightest pressure and I could tell this razor+blade combo was meant for me. We understood each other.
The Merkur 180 is a fine tool.
I did not get a single nick or razor rash from my shave. I keep feeling the inside of my neck area for stubble. It's a tough area to get smooth and I usually accept there will be some stubble in that area. It's smooth as a babies bottom in that area as well as my entire face!
To think the Feather Platinum blades are just 33 cents each as opposed to $3.25/ea for the Fusion razors!
I'm hoping I can do my head with the 180 as well, but won't try that until tomorrow.
I did my head with the Jatai and got a bit over zealous and nicked myself for the first time.
Anyway, I'm exceptionally pleased with the Merkur 180 and Feather blade combination. This is just my 4th wet shave and I have already found my perfect kit. Saaaweeeet!
Regards,
Dean
