Mergress vs Progress

i bought & sold a Progress awhile ago - what bugged me was that each blade edge wasn't parallel to the head's edge - looked crooked & I'm a little anal - I attributed that to the blade holes not having tight tolerance around those 2 posts - a design shortcoming IMO - the Futur is too aggressive for me but a blade sits on that bar (Gillette style) very tightly.

Question : aside from a nicer twist knob & better calibrated dial , does the Mergress solve that alignment issue that the Progress has ? blade hole diameters are fixed and so unless the Mergress posts are made thicker I don't see how blades would be held straight in the Mergress ?

I owned a Progress that was converted to a Mergress but never noticed the blade alignment issue you mention.

I recommend you send a PM to Eric (Mer on the board) and ask him your question.

The blade aligns perfectly on my Progress.

Can you show what you are referring to with a photo or two?

don't have a lens that would be able to show what I mean - i'm sure your blade alignment is right on but if it wasn't would you admit it ? but i'll bet I could mount a blade on your Progress and then just before tightening it turn the blade either clockwise or counter clockwise in the plane of the seating bed - tightening all the way would then show each blade edge just a little off parallel with the edges of the head - don't think it makes any difference in the shave it's just annoying for some people who appreciate precision.

this would have to be true since there's a good amount of space between the posts and the blade holes.

i just don't know why Merkur didn't use a bar instead of posts like the Futur and those great Gillettes of years gone by.

Why not just not turn the blade and then tighten it down so the blade is square? Wouldn't that solve your issue? Why make the effort to make the blade not straight?

I'm not sure where you're going with that thought.

Are you implying that those with bad blade alignments, if there are even any of these, would not admit it?

I probably misunderstood.

Can you rephrase?

Agree with the above posters. Plus, I disagree that a misaligned blade won't have an effect on the shave; it most certainly could, and in some cases could cause a very painful/irritating if not bloody shave.

you didn't misunderstand and i'm sorry if i've made you a little defensive - but i shouldn't generalize - you and thousands of others either (1) really do achieve perfect alignment each and every time you tighten it down (2) you don't really care if it's misaligned or (3) you've never noticed.
