Menthol addative

A different shaving site out there, one that also has a store, and it turns out that they offer a menthol additive for use with, well, everything.

Preshaves, aftershaves, soaps, etc...

They claim that it doesn't contain alcohol or fragrance...But they don't say what it DOES contain either!

So does anybody know exactly *** it is??

If you're referring to The Shave Den's M-Bomb, that's glycerin & menthol.

That is correct and it's great stuff - definitely to be used sparingly.

I've added it to glycerine soaps and a single drop added to your favorite AS or balm gives it a bit more moisturizing action and a nice menthol blast.

Great for customizing your products.

I agree - but use it sparingly. The first time I used it I went overboard and use to much of it together with their Iced Zero Sub Zero soap + Proraso. I almost froze my face off! :w00t:So, if you like menthol it is good - but all you need are a few drops.

OK, glycerin and menthol...

Now I have to ask this:

Isn't glycerin soap, and doesn't that mean that if I use this with an aftershave I'm leaving a layer of soap on my face?

@ Wendy - I wish I could find some menthol crystals, just a few, and at a good price. I'd like to melt some into my Col. Conk's soap. Problem is everybody either wants to sell 1/2 a pound, or a few ounces for the same price as half a pound!

I use liquid glycerin. Yes there is glycerin soap also. How much product are you adding menthol to?

Wendy - I've got about 3.5oz of glycerin based soap that I'd like to permanently mentholate if possible.

In addition to that, I'd jump at the chance to add menthol to everything else I've got...Turns out I'm something of a menthol addict

That is what I would say also. There are several ways to get the menthol feel but the menthol crystals melted in glycerin is the best.

I'd order the M-bomb but international postage would cost more than the product! However, I can buy menthol crystals and glycerin locally. Wendy, what's the best way to use the menthol crystals? Dissolve them in water first, then add to the glycerin or will they dissolve directly in the glycerin? Any guide to the ratio of menthol to carrier liquid? (Don't want to melt my face)

You can melt directly in the glycerine. I use about a tablespoon of each, microwave for about 10 seconds (varies by microwave). If I was using it on my own stuff I would just use water to melt it down. I have never tried water though on a soap.
When you add to your product keep in mind do not add more than a couple drops at a time. I use a tablespoon for an entire gallon.

Wendy, this would be a good product for you to carry! :001_smile

Glycerin soap??? If so, I may have to. When my Mom was sick I hurried into the office one morning while she was sleeping and ordered 50 pounds of soap base. Much to my surprise, when opening I thought what have they done. Well it was more like what have I done. LOL I ordered 50 pounds of stuff I have never used. I will soon be working on a glycerin recipe. I may just make bar soap though. :mad3: It was cheaper to keep it than pay shipping back.

wouldn't Peppermint Essential Oil do the same thing?

I have never tried that. I have some peppermint but I am not sure I would reccomend that. If you try it please let us know how it works. If nothing else you will smell sweet

No Wendy, I mean your version of the menthol bomb!

Many of us like to add menthol to just about every cream or soap we use - especially in the summertime.
