"McGarrett, Five-O"

That sense of gravitas, that immaculately arranged coiffure, that stage persona that announced the presence of a legend ... is there anyone in contemporary television who could hold a bamboo tiki torch to the indomitable Jack Lord? When McGarrett arrived on the scene in his nondescript 70s cop car, mono-colored suits and ties and flashed his Five-0 badge, putting a stamp on his authoritative presence, one got the sense that the generic criminal character actors were going to get it served to them on pupu platter with an extra serving of fried shrimp. You just don't get that anymore ...

The smart money for many years was on Willem DaFoe. Never could get it done though. The time has probably passed for that one.

Now? Jimmy Smits? Aging, smarter Bobby Simone on the islands. Yeah, that could work.

Gary Cole? The stern, crew-cut version.

Man, that is a hard one. Good question.

Good suggestions from both of you. I've been watching some episodes of Hawaii Five-0 on the idiot box recently and was struck by Jack Lord's hyper-serious demeanor. This was a guy who never "phoned it in." He treated every episode as though the life of his next of kin depended on it ... I love that.

I recently read comments about the "glacial pace of plotting" and "lack of realism" of Hawaii Five-O. I disagree strongly and have always felt that they don't make 'em like that anymore.

Apparently graphic violence, nudity, and "adult language" are requirements from some hipster viewers. Personally, I don't feel the shows made these days can even compete!

Always very smartly dressed, Steve McGarret. I imagine well-shaved as well. A credit to his office. Harry Callaghan? Smart Casual. But much cooler. Lt Columbo? Dress sense...well. And as for shaving!
Perhaps it says a lot that Columbo was married, whereas McGarret and Callaghan were not (to the best of my knowledge)

Boy do I remember 5-O. As a retired police officer who started at the cop shop back in 1971, that great line that Steve always seemed to say, "book 'em Dan-O" was well used. Loved the theme song too. :thumbup1:  :001_rolle

Does anyone remember the chapter (divided actually into two) where the arch evil on the island captured Steve and sunk him in a pool connected to all kind of tubes. I think he was in a coma and the images are still imprinted vividly in my memory - I was horrified watching this.:tongue_sm

As an aside, here in the UK, the phrase 'Hawaii' is often used as a colloquialism for the age 50. Usually by one catty woman about another, as in: "Thirty five? Never! She turned Hawaii a long time ago!"
