Man that burns

Used a sample puck of Ogallala Bay Rum this morning. Latherd up real nice in the bowl. Put it on my face and within 30 seconds, it started to burn.

Wow. I couldn't get that stuff off quick enough. Not sure what the problem was. I've used probably 20-30 different shaving creams/soaps and this was the first time I'd ever had that happen.

I don't have sensitive skin, but that was too much for me so into the trash it went.

I haven't heard of anyone else having problems with this soap, so I guess it is just me.

I know no one expects to have issues with a soap or cream, but are there any other products that really surprised you with a burn?

The Pirates Cove Bay Rum sort of does that to me. Not bad, not really painful, but sort of uncomfortable. I don't know why. I don't have sensitive skin either. I've only used it a couple of times because of this. Maybe too much product?

things that burned me, badly.

Mama Bear Hydrogen Soap
Florena regular shave cream
TOBS Rose Cream
TOBS Avocado Cream
Tabac soap
TGQ Savon de Champagne soap
TOBS Lavander Cream

I probably have LOTS more to list. I have sensitive skin, and a thick beard.

I get sometimes the same kind of mild burning feeling but it's not strong enough for me to quit that soap.

Do you think you might have a sensitivity to a common ingredient in all of these creams/soaps, assuming there is one? Sometimes people develop a sensitivity to certain preservatives (some like isothiazoline are known sensitizers, that is, repeated exposure or overexposure tends to result in a permanant sensitivity.) It could be anything - have you checked the labels for any common ingredients?

well, the thing is, I can use other items from these given brands with no problems at all.

It's purely a scent allergy.

I've narrowed it down to

some natural citrus oil items (TGQ items that have orange or lemon. local soapmaker used grapefruit oil)
some florals (TOBS Rose for sure, Provence Sante Verlaine soaps and Aftershave. YEEESH)

Lavenders can be a total hit or miss.

TGQ = totally amazing and great
TOBS = burn. (I've had bad luck with more than a few TOBS, yet St. James Shave Cream is one of my favorites)

Ive been told the burn from bayrum is a similar thing to the cool from menthol. I had a QED bayrum stick, rubbed it on my face and started lathering, within 5 seconds, it was burning like hell, I quickly washed it off and put some aloe gel on and skipped the shave that day.

Then you probably shouldn't try the aftershave. :bayrum2:

Whenever I apply any creams or soaps too dry it tends to irritate my skin. I had the same issue with my Col. Conk, but later realized it would happen with other stuff. However, my case might be sensitive skin, but just a thought.

i have a artisan soap in my rotation and sometimes i get a burn and sometimes i dont. i was ready to toss it or pif the other day but as a last ditch effort i thought id try leaving the lid off and let the scent dye down a bit to see if it would help. well so far so good.

try leaving the lid off for a few days.

Every single cream I have tried has caused a horrific burning sensation including the hypoallergenic TOBS cream :cryin:. However since switching to soaps this has stopped.

The Ogallala Bay Rum AS, until I realized I needed to shake the bottle up really well before using.

Last year I tried Ogallala Bay Rum Sage & Cedar and it really burned. I tried it a couple of other times with the same reaction. I do use the After shaves all the time and think they are great. Do shake well before using.

Truefitt&Hill West Indian Limes - I was thinking about going to the hospital. My only negative reaction to a cream so far.
