Mama Bear Burn

I have just bought my first two Mama Bear soaps, a tub of Ocean Rain for me and a Hydrogen shave stick for SWMBO. MY purchase experience was great and I received my package on Monday. My first shave with the product was great, the scent was perhaps more floral than I was expecting, but my lather was just awesome. I've used Col Conk lime before but Mama Bear's lather is totally different absolutely incredible; thick and slick. Without a doubt the best glycerine soap I've used.

The next day as soon as I lathered my face started stinging, I ignored it and continued on with my shave. By the time I got to my third pass I couldn't shave the lather off fast enough, my cheeks were absolutely on fire, but pretty much fine by the end of my post-shave routine. I didn't shave yesterday to give my face a day off, and today I tried my wife's Hydrogen shave stick and had the same reaction. I must be reacting to the Fragrance Oil in Mama Bear's soaps, what a total bummer because I absolutely LOVE the way they perform.

I was wondering if anyone would know if I melted the soap would enough of the fragrance oil flash off to make the product tolerable for my skin? Has anyone who's had this reaction tried this, and what were your results?

Thanks.

Chop off a chunk of the puck or stick and give it a whirl. You'll lose a fair bit of the scent though. Based on your reaction, stay far away from Dragon's Blood, especially since Hydrogen isn't one of the strongly scented ones. Does SWMBO have a reaction as well?

Hey Viper, I've got to tell you; your videos on YouTube were the biggest reason I placed an order with Mama Bear - great job!

SWMBO hasn't tried yet, but I doubt she'll have a reaction we have completely different skin types. I'm actually surprised that I reacted the way I did. I haven't had this reaction before. It can't be the glycerine, I squirt pure glycerine into my scuttle with Williams when I use it, and I haven't reacted to Col Conk Lime. I did however, melt the Conk and poured it into another container before I used it and flashed most of the fragrance in the process. That's what's making me think it might work with the Ocean Rain as well.

Will more FO flash off with each heating, ie: if the first melt doesn't solve the problem, might a second help?

Indeed, melting should work wonders to remove the EOs and FOs and your house will smell super-de-duper. I've only had a reaction to one product before (not Sue's) but have a friend with sensitive skin, so I understand your problem. Don't melt the whole thing, just a piece to try out. If it doesn't work out, I should have something to trade you.

Glad to hear than my amateur videos steered you to Sue, but it's a bummer if it's a no-go.

I've tried three different samples of MB soaps and each one of them burned my face up. I finally gave up and got rid of my remaining samples. I find the scent to be over the top, and I don't have a great sense of smell to begin with. I did get ok lather from them, but just didn't want to put up with burn any more.

Is it generally the FO's which cause the reactions? Is it the bases they use, or is it the plants from which the were extracted?

I ask because SWMBO has very sensitive skin and in the back of my head I am thinking I might be able to gift some soap which is not going to break her out.

Generally, it's the FOs and EOs which cause the reactions.... although some folks have sensitivity to other ingredients as well.

I don't think I have sensitive skin, but even Mama Bear unscented gives me mild burn. Too many other choices out there to use something less than great!

I had the same reaction with MB Ye Olde Barbershoppe, but out of the 10 MB soaps I have used that was the only one that burned.

I am celiac and I have had the same type of problems with some soaps and creams. I remember the Palmolive cream in particular for being cause of strong redness on the face after shaving. I have been careful since without any strong issue. The skin is quite absorbent of allergens, this is a risk that must be paid attention to as consequences can be dire.

Yeah, if you have wheat sensitivities Mamma Bears won't be for you. She puts wheat protein in her soaps. I'm gluten intolerant and I can't handle any soaps with wheat protein in them. Funny you should mention Palmolive cream. It did not turn my face red, but it did burn.

I don't know what exactly caused the reaction in the Palmolive cream, but staying away from it resolved the issue. I've been sticking with Monsavon, Mitchell Wool Fat and Williams Mug Soap without issue. I just wish I could find a local source of Palmolive shaving stick to try, but oh well...

I wish I had a local source for Monsavon! Surely you can get the Euopean Palmolive somewhere near by.
Monsavon is impossible to find in Canada and the USA.

As for Mama Bears, I loved the lather but it very much disagreed with my face.
I think that a lot of people are in the same boat.

Actually I can't find a source for euro Palmolive stick in France where I reside. It seems to be available in Germany and England but not in France. I agree that at 2 euro the puck Monsavon is good though...

Do you by any chance know if Monsavon is available in Italy? I have 2 friends going to there in the next few weeks and I'm asking for some Cella, so I might toss that on the list if it can be found
