Making My Own Brush?

I'm over at the TGN site and I'm thinking it might be a fun experience to make my own brush, but I don't know what's involved and how to set a proper loft. If I order a 22mm knot, would a handle with a 22mm hole work or do I have to compensate for something I'm not aware of?
