Lupo .95 or Yates EH BYO

I own the Lupo.95 closed comb and open comb razors.

I am considering buying a Yates EH built your own. But I don’t know if there’s that much improvement in the shave to make it worthwhile.

Anyone by chance does anyone own both of these razors by chance?

Cool and slimy
I have the Lupo .95 OC, a Yaqi Vostok 1.05 DC (similar to Lupo), had a Lupo DC and have a Yates 921 with M and EH plates.

I haven't used the EH plate in a while, but it is a bit more efficient and aggressive than the Lupo .95 OC already. It is more of a sidegrade and to be frank, I simply prefer the Lupos. I know it is much more expensive, but if you want something better, maybe try a Blackbird. Or maybe a Yaqi Bohemia, more effective than a .95 OC, heavy and very different.

The thing is, nothing is bad about the 921, it is a good shaver, but there is also nothing particularly outstanding. The other Yates razors are all much milder than the 921 EH plate, if you want to dial that up, you need something else.

What are you looking for?

More/less bladefeel?
More/less aggression?
...

It's tough to give you a proper advice without further information...

Cheers!

I have the EH and had the Lupo .95 closed comb. I have the Lupo .72. I did not do a side by side. From memory, Yates is more efficient and worth the efficiency for the blade feel. Up there with blackbird but a bit more comfortable. I am typically a 3 pass shaver but I could get a pretty clean 2 pass with the Yates but not Lupo. The Lupo felt like it should have more efficiency given bladefeel. Lupo more nimble. This is obviously just my opinion.
I’d say depends on your beard and how often you shave and how satisfied you are with the Lupo. What is it lacking or do you just want to try something different? It felt /shaved different to me.

R41 and you are done..
I have many efficient / aggressive DE's.
Had to beat the 41..
The right blade, in the right hands, great tool....
Not to mention it is very cheap.
Zamak, yep....but hey....it will clear the fields quickly.
Bottom-line it is all personal...
Hope find the best for you.

I've had a Lupo .95 closed comb and it was decent, but nothing impressive. I didn't like the face feeling of the sharp solid bar, while the efficiency was good. I've got my hands on a Ti Yates EH with the scalloped bar for a couple of months now and it has become my absolute favourite razor. What I like about it is that it can be used at a very steep angle, which I really enjoy and very few razors are capable of doing such a thing and when you combine that with a very high efficiency and smoothness, it becomes a fantastic razor.

I was always put off by the fact how the Yates 921 heads look like and I've never expected much, but boy was I wrong. My first shave wasn't very impressive and that was probably because I didn't know how to properly use it, but after the second and the third shave I knew that I will in time like it even more. At first, I thought that it was almost as good as my Ti Blackbird, but after a while it feelt equal to the point of straight up beating it up.

I've had a lot of good razors and my preference does change from time to time, but this razor is just on another level for me. Now, I can't say for sure whatever you're going to feel the same way about the Yates EH, but like I said, if you enjoy razors that work with steep or very steep angles and high efficiency, then this razor is something to be concidered. The Lupo .95 is still a very good razor and I still got some good shaves with it, but I wasn't blown away by it either, so I'd say above good, but still below impressive.

I've had the Lupo .95 & .72 in SB, and it for sure is a good shaver.
I have the Yates 921 in Brass with OC H plate, and for sure, it is a great shaver. ;-)

For me, the H plate is plenty, and yields results on-par with my Blackbird SB, Wolfman WR1 OC .72, etc.
So, can't comment directly about bumping-up to the EH plate.

My experience is similar. I have the Lupo with .72 and .95 baseplates (closed comb) and the Yates 921 H plate (scalloped). The Yates is the easiest for me to use in terms of getting a very high quality shave with minimal effort. The Lupo needs a little more attention to angle for me. I haven't tried the Yates EH plate.

A difference between the Lupo and the Yates is the angle you hold the handle when shaving. The Lupo is like a Gillette Tech where the handle is held up more so the head of the razor is more parallel to your face and the Yates bends the blade more so you hold the handle angled down a little more (like you would with a Henson).

I read some reviews where people thought the Yates EH was better than the Lupo so I wanted to try it for that reason. Maybe it’s a minority opinion.

That reminds me of how the Rockwell bends the blade, which I usually got exceptional shaves using it. it was kind of a almost no thanking shave with the Rockwell

Yeah! That's how I feel with the Yates. Like I don't even have to think about the angle, I just shave and I get a close, comfortable shave without any effort. I also love the Tech clones (Lupo, Game Changer etc.) but I always have to think about holding the correct angle with them.

No offense inteeded, but you should perhaps define your expectations first.

"Better" for whom? Better for what purpose? What's YOUR purpose other than adding another shaver to the den?

Cheers!

Dammit, ya'll. I started reading this thread because I had a simple question. Would it be worthwhile for me to order/swap out a Lupo .72 or .95 plate for my .58 plate, which I find to be too mild. But of course you people have to take it in an entirely different direction and bring a whole new razor into the picture which I have been looking at for a couple of years and now covet. Thanks.

I had read some reviews of the EH where people preferred it to a lupo it is , which was enough information for me to want to possibly try it if that’s a common opinion

Sounds like the Lupo 95 is comfortable enough not to buy a EH. I might try to pick one up later when the hype dies down similar to the blackbird hype a few years ago.
