Luc DE Blades Review Project

I like them both. The Prime is sharper and pretty smooth. The ST301 Stainless is only a little less sharp, but perhaps a bit smoother. I can’t pick one as my preference. It depends on my mood.
Yikes. I was hoping to go in the opposite direction given the Prime's extra amount of PTFE coating.

The Prime really smooths out. The first shave might be a little crisp. But I firmly believe that sharpness increases at the expense of smoothness. The Prime is sharper than the ST301, so it has to be a little less smooth.

7 shaves completed with Dorco Titan and the game changer. I need to try another blade as this combo felt abnormally better than my previous attempts. Stay tuned, I am not switching razor yet. Game changer again with a new Dorco.

Back so I will retest the Game Changer with a fresh Dorco Titan. I did shave 1 earlier today and it was not as smooth but it was smoother than the Merkur 38c and Gillette Tech. To be continued…

5 shaves in and this is either a QA anomaly again (doubt it) or this blade works much better with this razor.

I like it with this combo. 2 shaves to go.

My conclusion on the Game Changer + Dorco blade is very positive. I believe that Dorco is maybe a hair less smooth than Astra in that combo but very usable. For now, I need to remember to use my remaining Dorco in the Game Changer when the time comes. It was good in the Merkur but not nearly as sharp and smooth.

Shave 1 for tonight - Gillette SuperSpeed with a fresh Dorco Titan

Shave 1 yesterday evening with the Gillette SuperSpeed and Dorco.

I was expecting the SuperSpeed to be rough but no. It was the usual SuperSpeed shave. I find that the SuperSpeed doesn't clamp the blade as much as my other razors. It almost sounds like I'm spreading cold butter on burnt toast. Maybe it's because it's a TTO instead of a 2 or 3 pieces razor.

The shave was smoother than expected, BBS, and better than the Gillette Tech. Now, I'm starting to wonder if the blade in the Gillette Tech was a dud!

A total of 5 shaves were completed with the Dorco Titan. While the blade was better with the SuperSpeed compared to the Gillette Tech, I decided to stop after 5 shaves. I got 5 bbs shaves but felt like it was time for the next razor.

Tonight, I will be using the Dorco Titan with the Fendrihan MKII Scientist.

Post shave 1 with the Dorco and Fendrihan razor yesterday evening.

Very good shave, bbs, similar feel with the Game Changer. I am curious to see if this will remain as comfortable for the next 6 shaves (7 total).

2 shaves in and the second shave was smoother. Again, like the Game Changer razor, this blade is a good match with the Fendrihan razor.

6 shaves completed with the Fendrihan razor and Dorco Titan. I could push it for shave 7, but it's starting to feel very average. So I will toss the blade at #6. It was surprising to find that Dorco Titan and Gillette Tech do not like each other at all (YMMV).

I will update the wiki page and this thread will be on pause for a little bit. Following the 50 razors stash that I bought off eBay, I have to try a few of them. So I will log them in my shaving journal.

Quick update, testing blades are still on hold. Thanks to the CTB5 (Canadian Traveling Box 5), I got 4 more blades to test that I added to the wiki page.

I added:
  • Treet Carbon (I never experienced a carbon DE blade that agreed with my face. Maybe in 5 different razors, one of them will work?) I think I tried that one before but it was a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... and not in these razors...
  • Suneko Platinum
  • Silver Star Stainless
  • Lord Cool
According to my calculations(Excel really because I got lazy), I should be able to resume this when I'm done testing 3 razors for the CTB5 (7 shaves left) and then I have 10 razors that I was looking forward to testing from my eBay lot (70 shaves max - 7 shaves per razors). So I should be back here in 77 days as of today. If all goes well, I will kick this thread alive around October 11th...

It is good to try DE samplers to find the right blade. I see that some people go even further and buy the blades they like in sets of 100.

My question to those who end up with huge collection of blades is. Do the blades go dull with time if kept for years without opening ?

The blades one will spent on a year is about 50 the most. I hardly reach to 25 blades in one year.

How the blades feel when you end up with a blade you purchase 5 or ten years ago ? Are there any difference in performance ?

The performance is not affected, no. If you buy something like a carbon blade, it might rust if it is stored where it's damp. I would be more careful with those. Most blades are stainless steel, so there are no issues there.

The edge will stay sharp if unused. Some use vintage blades when they can find them. I have some injector blades made in the 1970s and they feel as sharp (if not more) than a modern-day injector blade.

I also have a few packs of blades that I bought over 10 years ago (and I use them here and there). I never noticed any difference while using them. They feel the same and are as sharp. I am not in the vintage blade market but I used them here and there. If the blade is new, properly sealed, no rust, I might consider it. The blades that I bought myself (pack of 100) those I will use use.

Where it might change is when you do a different combo (Blade vs Razor) or when the blade production changes. Recently we saw this with the Astra blades made in Russia vs India and the Dorco made in Korea vs Vietnam.

For Astra, they are so similar that I will keep buying them. For Dorco, I disliked them before and they are now sharper. That's why I'm giving them a run again.

Thanks, good to know

Now I understand why some people like to collect different brands.
