Looking for the Ideal Brush

I just got turned on to C.O. Bigelow recently and have chosen this cream for daily use. I use the tube variant and mix in a bowl. I use a Simpson pure badger and it does the job, but I spend a lot of time mixing (a little over a minute). I was wondering if there was a brand or type of brush that would perform better with this cream and method. Thanks!

A minute doesn't sound too bad. With my water, it took me longer than that when I bowl lathered. If you're looking to save time, try face lathering. Squeeze some on the brush or use your finger to just smear some on your cheeks.

May I suggest another "Simpson" it is called The Duke their are three sizes, the one I have is the DUKE 3 in Best Badger.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the tips. The brush I have is a Beaufort B3. I was considering one of the Duke brushes as I have read it really works well with creams. I appreciate the help!

Simpson colonel X2l is great for bowl lathering, if you are going to stick with Simpson

Otherwise, Semogue SOC boar is an excellent brush as well

I love my Duke 2 in best, but it wouldn't be ideal for bowl lathering. I'd suggest going with a brush around 48-50+ knot for that..like a Duke 3. Frankly, I'd tell you to order the Semogue SOC 2-Band if you like your Simpson pure and want a great cream/bowl lathering/ability to do it all soap/face lather brush. It will have less scritch than your used to, but much softer tips and better backbone. IMHO, it's the best value on the market for badger brushes. Let us know what you go for!

Thanks for the tip on the Semogue gentlemen. I think I will give that shot!!! Also I will add the Simpson X2l to the X-mas list!

Where might I buy one of these fine Semogue brushes? I am in the US and after a quick search I couldn't find one. Thanks

I absolutely love the Beaufort. It is my first brush sold to me for $10 by my wet shaving mentor. I still love using it, but I do get tired of breaking a sweat mixing cream!

My Muhle Silvertip Fibre (they have 2 types of synthetics) outperforms all of my brushes, which are clearly quality brushes:
Vie-Long Horse, Muhle Silvertip and Semogue Owners Club Boar.
The synthetic Muhle loads soap really fast, making it easy to always load (more then) enough.
It really creates a nice creamy lather really fast. It's the opposite of a lather hog, flow through it excellent.
And when you are done it dries super fast. And it is cheaper then most silvertips.
IMO They are the best brushes available right now. The reason they are not more popular probably that

  • synthetics in the past have been disappointing
  • most people like the idea of traditional, natural hair
  • Muhle doesn't have a distributor in the US
  • Muhle is one of the few good synthetic brush builders
