Looking for Something Sharper than a Derby.

I'm looking for a razor blade that's sharper than a Derby razor blade, but not something as sharp as the Feather. Something in the middle range... Thanks.

Just about every blade meets your requirements.
Why don't you try an Israeli Personna Red pack blade(IP RED). Those are really smooth and sharp and likely similar to what you're looking for. RazorBladesAndMore.com has those. So does ItalianBarber.com and they're closer to you. Sputnik Teflons are what I want to stock up on. What kind of razor do you use? I don't think it'll really matter much but just wanted to know.

Anything. Personally I like Personna labs and Astra's as my everyday blades. Quite sharp, but yet smooth. My very limited experience with Gillette Blacks was also quite positive and will probably be what I order next.

My stock recommendation is to go with Astra SP's, which can be had ridiculously cheaply (under $10.00/100 shipped). Personna Labs/Meds and red IP's are also favorites of mine.

*** does a spoon have to do with shaving? Ask yourself that question...

I think they call that 'cutting edge humour' :biggrin1: - when you've been here longer you will see that comments like that are not poking fun at you, they are meant good naturedly.

I quite like Derby blades and never fail to get a good shave from them. for sharper I would recommend any of the gillette blades (7 o'clocks, Silver Blues, Astra Sps etc). you can get a gillette blade sample pack from connaughtshaving.com, a number of other vendors also do various themed sampler packs - this could be a good option in helping you decide where to spend your 'hard earned'.

You can use it to scoop shaving creme out of the tub. Or put your derby blade on it and catapult it in to the trash can. Or if someone is like "I love Derby blades" then someone else is like "ack! gag me with a spoon" you can be like "ok..."

:biggrin1:

For your other question... I don't think you can go wrong with Astra SP. sharper than derby, not as sharp as feather. Astra SP is right there. or Gillette Blacks.

Me, I'd go sharper, why take baby steps?

Being serious, it varies so much that every answer is potentially nirvana, or ludicrous. Best bet is to get some samples, if you want, PM me an address & I'I'll send a couple three your way

There are a wealth of options here. IME, Derbys are on the low end of the sharpness scale along with Dorcos and Lords (and probably a few others).

Blades sharper than Derbys that I have consistently enjoyed: Astras, 7 O'Clock yellows, Sharks, Med Prep/Labs, Polsilver SIs, Feathers.

Of those I might start with Astras and Sharks (since they are cheap and easily found) and see how you do.

My take on blades (in general):

BEST Feather, Kai (Japan)

ABOVE AVERAGE Most 'Platinum Chrome' blades (England, Greece, Israel, Russia, USA, etc.)

AVERAGE Merkur, Wilkinson, Bolzano (Germany)

BELOW AVERAGE Most 'third-world' blades (Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Turkey, etc.)

WORST Derby Topaz

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Mike
