Looking for new razor.50th birthday gift

Hello Gentlemen,

I have a big birthday (50) coming up soon. My better half has asked me what I would like. I told her of course some new shaving equipment:001_rolle Hence, my question to you all.
I would love to have a new razor. I have been using my merkur progress (setting 3) practically everyday for the last 3 years. Love it, it gives me great shaves but I think it's time for a change.
I have been looking at the feather asd2, EJ chatsworth lined, merkur futur, above the tie atlas or an ikon. What do you guys think? Open to any suggestions.

Thanks,
Andy

My opinion should be taken with a relative grain of salt as I've never actually owned any of the razors you mentioned. It sounds like you enjoy a relatively mild razor with your Progress set on 3. I've heard that the Futur can be quite a bit more aggressive than the Progress but I could be wrong. If you want another adjustable I would look into an old Fatboy or Slim. I got one and had Krona Kruiser replate it and I have a new looking razor. If you're going with Above the Tie(a beautiful looking razor I might add) I've heard that the M1 plate is the milder of the trio. I've heard that the Feather is pretty mild as well. With the iKon razors I've heard that their open comb is milder than their safety bar head.

Again, I've never owned the razors mentioned here, just relaying information I've gathered on my own hunt for the perfect razor. For what it's worth, I'm currently after an iKon OSS and ATT M1.

If you're going for something for one of the biggest birthdays there is, go big. I would go with the Above The Tie Razor, the iKon or the Feather. The ATT razor obviously offers the most versatility with 3 different baseplates and I hear nothing but rave reviews about the quality. The quality on the Feather is said to be top notch too, but I read different things about the shave. Some love the newest version more, some the older version. The iKon also gets a lot of love around here and would be my personal choice, but only because I like open comb razors better.

I think a stainless razor would be a great thing for your 50th. You would have a great razor no matter which one you picked. Just pick one that speaks to what you like and has the look you like. In a short 4 years I will be joining you in the AARP eligible age bracket. I never thought I would be 50. I can't imagine where all of the years have gone. It's amazing.

Best of luck and happy birthday early.

Rest in Peace
Andy; Jeff_H suggests a stainless would be great and I certainly agree. Not mentioned is a Weber Polished Head. I have one. There is a thread exclusively (***Weber Razor***) for more information. They ship to France. And an early Happy Birthday to you!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I still have a couple of months before the big day. Yes, It looks like I will be going for a stainless steel razor. I really like the feather but the more I read the weber sounds like a great razor for the price.

Have a good Sunday,
Andy

I turned 50 last Jan. I have a slim in excellent condition that is my birth year and quarter. It's a great razor. I also have a Progress and a Futur. The Futur is a different kind of shave but it consistently provides me with excellent, close, two pass shaves. What I don't have yet is a stainless steel razor though. I think it's a great choice!

What do you guys think of the 1964 Gillette slim ?

andy

A great adjustable. I like adjustables myself so you can't go wrong with a slim. Me, I'd get a Toggle! Now THAT is worthy of a 50th. Then again, a nice slim in minty condition is good too.

A birth year adjustable in near-mint condition would be special for a big birthday.

I dunno sounds like you got carte Blanche from the missus and unless the gillette slim is THE gillette slim James Bond used in goldfinger it wouldn't be worth that much... I'd rather have an ikon deluxe kit with all three heads (if you can find one) with a couple different handles

Have you considered the Ikon Slant? Many members here have one and even more have an opinion on the razor. If you have not used a slant before then I would certainly consider it.

Maybe the Missus will permit more than 1 razor for your 50th? A minty or refinished Slim in Rhodium to represent the past 50 years and the stainless steel razor of your choice to represent the next 50 years.

I was going to suggest that I have a Slim that I just haven't been able to get on with and I thought it was a 64'. It's a perfect candidate for a replate. No damage to the knurling or head, just a slight bit of brassing on the handle. Alas, I just grabbed in and it's an H2. 1962.

Still, I think 2 for the 50th is an excellent idea.
