What's new

Looking for info on some old shaving soap?

I scored some old shaving soap on ebay recently. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me anything about it. The box simply says Shaving Soap, inside are 2 small pucks. Also states in is distributed by Surrey Inc. Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Also it reads "Produces a rich hot creamy lather with a he-man scent" :001_rolle

Just hoping to get some background info on it, or see if anyone has used it before.

In-ter-est-ing! Can you post photos of the other sides of the box and of the pucks?
Thanks!:thumbup1:

Surrey? Isn't that the company we now know as VDH?

Maybe you just bought a couple of very old pucks of VDH soap!

I was thinking the same thing. Surrey used to be located in Texas, just as VDH is now, however, the soaps are not the same. I liked Surrey MUCH better. It was my favorite inexpensive soap. In fact, when I was no longer able to find it in my local stores, I used to order a dozen pucks directly from the company. Then, they just disappeared.

The old Surrey package looked just like the current VDH, color and all. Too bad the product is inferior, though.

Does it list ingredients?

No ingredients listed. I'm going to get some more pics up later, batteries are charging, and my son's has guitar practice. Too bad I already shaved today, I really want to try this stuff

Ok, some more pics. Everything is just repeated on both sides, in other words the front says the same as the back, the left the same as the right, etc.

The side says NO. 1-200 distributed by Surrey Inc. Minneapolis, Minnesota 55427.

The top says "The cleanest and best preparation for shaving...refreshing and delightful to the face while it softens the beard."

That is pretty much all the markings I can find on it.

Well I tried this soap today...

First, the smell: If He Man smells anything like an old basement floor, I don't want anything to do with him. I was able to wash most of the smell away, but not all. I even placed a few drops of Old Spice on the puck while I showered, helped a little. Maybe over time it will get better.

I used a boar brush and was able to work up a lather pretty quickly. The shave was decent, but not amazing. Pretty close and no irritation. It also seemed that the lather began to dry in spots before I finished shaving, but not as bad as Williams does for me. Now my regular soaps are MWF, Arko, and vintage Old Spice, so that is what I'm comparing too. Unfortunately it would rank fourth in that lineup, but would surely be above Williams.

All in all, not a bad shave, and I will continue to try it. After only shaving with it once, on a scale of 1 to 10 I would only give it a 4. Mainly because of scent.

I'm going to keep working at it, maybe I just need to find the right combination of water, brush and soap.

I know not the best review but I'll probably put the other puck up for trade if anyone is just curious to try.

Thats a shame its gone musty then. I have had a couple that must have been stored in a basement or under a mildew-y sink

Placing the pucks in the fresh air and sun will help, or placing them in a can of charcoal can freshen them up.

Thanks for the tip, maybe I should just leave the soap in the bowl placed in the window for a bit.
