Looking for brush recommendation - all of Doc4's recommended info

1. I have been wetshaving for about 3 years and have owned one brush, EJ's Best Badger: http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Edwin-Jagger-Best-Badger-Shaving-Brush-Medium-Black_p_1572.html. It was a great brush to start, and I liked the slight scritch when using it. But it's been shedding hairs faster than the top of my head, and that's a problem. (I take care of it very well, too, so I don't think it's a care issue.) I also find it a tad small. I go clean shaven, face and head, and that's a lot of ground to cover for that little guy. I would like a bit more loft and a bit longer handle, but not much. (Well, I think I want more loft, but that's part of the requested recommendation!)

2. I use creams exclusively--mostly Al's, but also Proraso on occasion--and prefer bowl lathering. Getting two passes on my head and face requires more lather than I can get into this brush. I also find that my facelathering leads to loose, watery lather.

3. I want something that holds a lot of lather, whips up creams quickly and easily, is a bit scritchy (basically, a Super Badger or equivalent feel, although I could go Best Badger again), lasts longer than my EJ, has more loft and diameter than my EJ (at least I think I want that), but isn't so big for a slim 5'9" guy with medium sized hands.

4. I don't care about aesthetics.

5. I would like to stay under $75, but if you can convince me that a $110 brush will change my world, I'd do it.

6. Because I bowl lather, I want something that I can use without too much of my hand getting in the bowl. I also think the feel of 2 more cm on the handle would be nice.

7. I went into an Art of Shaving store, and liked the density and feel of their Super Badger. But I'm sure I'd say the same about most brushes. I haven't really settled on any other ones, and that's because the search is proving daunting. Even after reading sticky after sticky and wiki after wiki, I don't feel like my single EJ has given me enough experience to choose anything. Hence, this thread.

8. I'm a one-product kind of guy. I have one razor (the EJ DE86 http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Edwin-Jagger-DE86-Double-Edge-Safety-Razor-Black_p_723.html) that I love, and use one blade type (the peerless Feather, which, yes, I even use on my head), mostly one cream (Al's Old Bodega, but his Casablanca or Proraso in the summer), and mostly one ASB (Al's Old Bodega, but Al's Mojito in the summer). This will certainly be my only brush, and, hopefully, my last for damn near a decade.

Many thanks for your help! I'm always amazed at the generosity of this community when it comes to helping fellow wetshavers.

2 more cm...although now I realize that I should have said "up to 2 more cm"

Did you want to stick with badger?

Any of the Omega Professionals come to mind. For under $20 shipped, worth a shot.

You could also talk to Rudy Vey about a custom brush if you like those dimensions or want something really high quality without going broke.

If you're interested in boar, I'd go with a Semogue SOC. Just as soft, large, great with anything, softer than snot after break-in.

Savile Row 3824. They're sold out at QED but if you look around on the BST they show up from time to time.

I am looking to stick with badger.

That Savile Row looks nice, but a bit pricey. I'll look in the BST, though.

Any other suggestions?

I can't find much for good badgers in that price range that are tall with a tall handle. What about a smaller bowl?

Whipped Dog has the Firehouse handles that you can have custom made with a tall handle. The Silvertip is great but floppy at taller lofts, so if you're looking for a brush like your current one but with a longer handle and better knot, that's an option, and would probably be $50 or so.

Otherwise a TGN Finest knot would work at a higher loft I believe, but you'd need a tall handle to go with it. Which makes me say you could talk to Rudy Vey, but that would be just outside your budget I think.

If you can go a bit shorter, Vintage Blades has a Finest brush that's 1cm taller than yours for $40.

Simpson Colonel X2L fits your price range...the Best grade knot gives a nice tactile feedback on your face...slightly thicker knot (22 mm), but shorter loft...a Simpsons brush can certainly stand along as a "one and only" brush for a very long time...

Give it a look!

Thanks everyone! I'm thinking a custom brush is the way to go. What difference would there be between a 22mm and a 24mm at something like 48mm? Does that sound like the right combination for my specs?

For bowl lathering creams I'd go with 50-52mm on the loft, you'll still get some scrub and better flow-through when building & applying your lather.

At the mentioned price range you have a vast selection of Brush brands to choose. Some of them are : a) New Forest Brushes. Entry level at $30, Top level $73, ( this is the most expensive) including world wide postage. In my opinion excellent brushes in any aspect, also the best value for your money. b) : Progress Vulfix,
some models that might fit your needs are VulfixSuper Badger 2235 at a price of $ 53, VulfixSilvertip Badger 2234 shaving, faux horn handle at the price of $47, Vulfix Super Badger 660S Medium at the price of $24. The prices mentioned are without postage, but it is very low. c) Simpson's : Simpsons Berkeley in Best $61, Simpsons Colonel in best $ 77, Simpsons Commodore in best. X1 $66, X2 $77, Simpsons Keyhole in best KH1 $ 91. and many other Simpson brushes in the price range you have mentioned. If any of these brushes ring you a bell, sent me a PM in order to sent you the links.

Thanks again for your advice, everyone. In the end, it was between Whipped Dog and TGN, and I went with a Penworks 22/54 Finest TGN knot with a 49mm cream and grey marbled acrylic handle. It was on sale for $43, which was great! I'll post pics when it arrives.

I chose it over the RV and Simpsons for price, and the Whipped Dog only had black and silvertip. I was very tempted by their black badger, in part because of the lovely craftsmanship that you can see in Chadao's pics, but my desire for Finest ultimately lead to me to the one I got.
