Looking for boot recommendations

I live in Canada, and our winters are gross. I have been looking for some really nice looking, but rugged boots for a while but am having a hard time. I really like Red Wings, but they are SO expensive and hard to find a large selection here in Canada. I like these:

Anyone have any recommendations? I want them to be stylish, well made and not TOO expensive. The second pair are over $350......

For me the best cold weather boots are from Sorel. Great leather outers with rubber bottom and thick, separate, felt liners. When I lived in Quebec you used to be able to buy replacement felt liners. Dubbin is great for keeping the uppers water tight.

These days I live in Brampton . . . so I keep a pair of timberland boots ankle height for the few days I need them. Mostly slush here . . . hell of a thing to protect your dress shoes from. Toe rubbers and overshoes have long since gone out of fashion . . . so we carry our shoes to work or wear some form of winter boot all day in the office.

I love my Redwing travelers. The Alden Indy is an excellent expensive boot. The LLBean Kaytidins (sp?) are US made and many like them The best of all are White Boots from Spokane WA if you can find them. I have no assoc with White Boots but living in the area I know alot of workmen, ranchers, sportsmen who swear by them.

Bite the Bullet and get the REDWINGS!:thumbup1:

That looks like what is likely to happen, but I will have to buy them from the states and get them shipped. I went to the Red Wings store yesterday and the prices and selection SUCKED!

There are a lot of good choices out there. Sorel is a good choice as is L.L. Bean I have both and they are excellent. Another fine boot is Danner and they have a nice selection of styles. I have had Danner boots for years. Some friends of mine have had Danner boots for over twenty five years and have had Danner rebuild them. They come back looking like new.

Good luck,

Doug

Honestly? There is Filson, then everything else.

I'd go for a pair of the Filson Highlander or Uplander boots. Still made in the US (which is like Canada's foot, eh).

While I love my Indys, no way are they a winter boot.

If you're looking for a winter boot, you might want something with a little insulation.

Also, if you get a quality leather boot, you need to be prepared to maintain it properly - otherwise, you'll be wasting your money.

Finally, the Redwings have a pretty hard sole (at least that's what I thought when I tried them on, so if you do a lot of walking that may be a consideration.

Insulation is not an issue as these will be worn primarily for daily use within the city. They just need to stand up against snow and slush, but I will waterproof them.

I'm glad someone posted the White's Boots website. They are pricey but last forever and they will rebuild them as needed. Friends of mine with them say (perhaps in a bit of exageration) they are the last boots they will need to buy. Redwings made in the US are super-they do have some that are imported-stick with the US ones.

I'm liking the L.L. Bean selections, especially Katahdin Iron Works Boots. Waterproof, Vibram soles. No temp rating though.

I'm wearing these at the moment at work. Walked about 10 km in them on the weekend and they were nice and comfy.
