Lone Ranger; Once Again I am in the minority

Just saw Lone Ranger tonight with my son. For the most part, I liked it and I thought Johnny Depp was good and Armie Hammer was a good choice (IMHO) for the Lone Ranger. I found some of the same traits from Pirates or the Caribbean; the slap stick kind of humor and improbable stunts and history.

But most don't seem to like it and Rotten Tomatoes thinks it's rotten :biggrin1:

The next movie I am looking forward to is the new Star Trek movie :thumbup1:

I enjoyed the heck out of it, but maybe part of that was that my father was in town, and I saw it with him, my stepmother, sisters, and wife. Depp has a way of stealing a scene, and we all laughed and enjoyed.

I too read reviews online that it wasn't that good. But I am excited to see it. Glad to hear the reviews may be unfounded. I'm not looking for the best movie of all time, just something entertaining.

I think that's just that most critics are critics (go figure). When your job is to watch movies and critique them, I think you tend to develop a bit of movie snobbery. I was a film major for two semesters, and I saw this trait in abundance.

The Lone Ranger movie (I haven't seen it yet) is likely fine for what it is - an entertaining summer movie, high on action, low on "acting". I find movies like this succeed as long as they don't take themselves too seriously, which this film apparently does not. The critics will destroy it because there is no gripping highbrow drama, but it's a fun way to kill two hours, so enjoy it for what it's worth and pay no mind to the talking heads.

I read a national review that showed critics hated it, bad press has caused the majority to skip it, it's now a major Disney flop, yet those few that do go see it are walking away totally satisfied.

And I absolutely hate Will Ferrell :)

I saw it a few days before it was released here, as my realtor (who is now a semi-permanent part of our life) is Armie Hammer's mother in-law. She rented out a theater for "friends" and threw a party to preview the movie. I have to say, watching a movie in a real theater with a plate full of food and a good beer in the cupholder is definitely the way I want to go to the movies from now on.

Anyway, I thought it was a good movie. A bit long: beer + 2 1/2 hour movie = moderate discomfort; but entertaining. I've told friends that if they go in to see a western, they'll leave disappointed. If they go to see Pirates of the Caribbean + horses + warpaint + gunfights, they'll probably enjoy it. I thought Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer did a great job with what they were given. I just didn't get the weird "nature is out of balance" stuff with the jackrabbits and scorpions and stuff. I thought the horse stole every scene he was in. I still liked the movie, but I won't be buying the DVD or anything.

I haven't seen it, but I want to. I'm glad the reviews are bad. The lower my expectations going in, the less chance of disappointment.

There's something wrong with that horse.

+1

My wife and I took our two boys to see it as a place where your seat is a recliner and you get food. It was a fun family movie. The boys really liked it, and my wife and I enjoyed it as well. I'm sure the mood of the family outing contributed to it, as well as the comfort level of the theater.

YES! I think you nailed it. It was like Pirates of the Caribbean with Horses and Warpaint. If you loved Pirates of the Caribbean, you will probably like this movie.

Now half as wise
I'll definitely have to see this now. In general, any film that is panned by the critics is one I usually enjoy, for the reasons mentioned earlier. I want to go to a movie to have fun and be entertained. If I have to walk out of a theater and "think about it" and have a "what were they trying to teach/tell me" discussion with someone, then that was a FAIL.
