What's new

Local shops, blends and mixes.

The same place i look for vintage straights carries a amazing array of local and area pipe blends. My favorite so far from this shop is her black briar. Has hints of Honey and oak. Does anyone else have local tobacconists that dabble in custom blends? if so share them if they ship even better ;)

I was introduced by a co-worker to a house blend at The Briar Shoppe in Houston. It's a three parts to one mixture of something they call "Accountant" (not Rattray) and "Highland Whiskey". Notes of chocolate, scotch and honey. It has an extremely pleasant room note.

Guess i forgot to share the name of the Place is Tobacco Junction in Laramie Wy. ran by an older lady. Antiques and tobacco. great place to waste some afternoons.

You should be aware, that not every place that appears to have custom blends, or their own house blends actually does. It's quite commonplace for a shop to buy a well known bulk, and simply give it their own name. This is quite annoying: if I am smoking Lane 1Q, I want to know it's Lane 1Q, instead of thinking it is a unique blend only offered by my local tobacco shop.

Having it renamed means I will not be able to interact with others about the blend on the Internet, as well as paying a price premium for the tobacco since it's supposed to be unique to that store.

I have no idea if your particular store is partaking in this practice, but it is quite commonplace. :mad3:

I just got my first pipe on Saturday. Here's the list at the place I went. I don't know if they ship. It's NJ and who knows what stupid laws we have in place here. The mgr Avi recommended Avi's Fave and Maraschino (I asked for a cherry) for starters. I liked the Avi's Fave. Not sure about the Maraschino yet. I didn't detect much cherry but I was working outside in my windy shed for my first use of Maraschino and wasn't really paying much attention to the smoke. I'll be back at the store maybe tomorrow.

Yeah, i am definitely aware of this practice in many tobacco shops. And for the most part even with this particular shop the blends are purchased from a much larger distributors. And yes some of it is re branded. But there are a few blends i do know are unique. So its a definite give and take. I have been able to fine a few very unique blends on the front range that i love. But i also have found some big box leaf that is down right delicious. I guess what i am getting at is whatever the blend local or not . Put it out there and see if there is something similar to your taste somewhere else.

it seems the mix is meant to be pretty light. They do have a very nice array of blends. I could see myslef makeing my way through this list quicker than i should :)

I'm in Gillette here, Wyofish. I wish we'd sort of get some culture and have a good tobacconist.

When I lived in Austin, I frequented Heroes and Legacies quite a bit. Like now I didn't smoke a lot of aromatics, but I was fond of their "Chairman of the Board" amaretto aromatic. And they had a cigar leaf/latakia mix called "Churchill", I believe, that was pretty strong but nice on a cold day. They also had another blend that was similar to my beloved Dunhill EMP.

My local shops just re-names Lane bulks. They are very creative though, they call 1Q "IQ-Professors choice". (I need to contact The Count of MerkurCristo for a sarcasm smiley)
