What's new

Life after Merkur34C?

I love my Merkur 34C and wonder if it's true love or just a fling. But where to go from here - I can handle a fraction more aggression but am a sensitive sort so nothing too butch. Style isn't a prerequisite but it's important. Suggestions for my promiscuity would be welcome.

I used my 34c for 5 months before i decided to try other razors.

I ended up going with the slim adjustable. The 34c still gets plenty of use though. If they made the 34c an OC version, i think it would be my only razor.

I have been using the 34c for a little over a year. Like many it is my first DE razor. Like the original poster, I guess I am wondering what would cause me to change? What is there to gain with other razors? Is it the angle of the blade, the heft, or something else that I am missing? I always thought that the 34c would be my first and last DE razor, but am I being close minded? Thoughts?

Run, quick before RAD sets in. :clown:

But seriously, being new myself I think it is kind of for some finding that perfect fit, if your 34c is good enough to be your only razor, then I congratulate you, I know I bought a Gillette New Type to try an open comb and have an EJ DE89 being shipped to try and hopefully have a decent razor for both travel and use at home.

With a Slim, FB, two Mergress, and a couple of Superspeeds I followed suit with a 34C. Since getting the thing I rotate the others in but nowhere as often. The HD is the one I go for and it's been that way for six months at least. With my arsenal, as a friend calls it, who needs anything else? :001_rolle

Thanks, chaps. Interesting suggestions. And all Vintage or alloy units and no hefty stainless steel options.

Slant! I have the 34C, Slim Adjustable, and the Gillette OC old and new style. I like them all but use the slant 80% of the time.

If you are like I was, perhaps you don't know what you are missing out on! Personally I started with the 34C and I thought it was perfect and I'd never get another razor. Then I got a 39C, and wow... what a world of difference. I didn't know such results were even possible! Then again, maybe the 34C really is the right fit for you - and if that's the case, don't try to fix something that's not broken!

The Merkur 34c was my second DE razor and I too felt it was a really top notch razor. For me it was smooth and efficient. In my hand it felt perfectly balanced. A real joy to use. I tried other more aggressive razors, to name a few: Fatip, R41 2013, and Parker 94R. I believe I shave just as close with the Merkur 34c as any other razor.
If you are satisfied with the shave you are getting from any razor, then the only reason to move on would be just for variety or the fun of trying something different. If you are just looking for a nice close shave, I think the 34c is all that most guys really need. Put a sharp blade in it and you're good to go.

+1 I agree with the gentleman from Massachusetts. The 34C is an excellent razor. The one razor I use for my daily shaves. I tried it today with a Feather blade--this was the best shave I've ever had. Shaving after a 34C? Shaving, for me, is all about a 34C.

Update: The second day with the Feather produced a harsh shave. I decided to load an Astra SP, and the 34C delivered an excellent shave. Only one comment: the 34C reigns supreme in this house.

Wow, so many choices. I would recommend going with some type of Slant. I love Slants, they are just fun to shave with and very effective.

Having a 34c as my first DE razor, after 3 months of using the Slim and Black Beauty I picked up a Late 40's super speed of the BST thread. I haven't looked back. Late 40's SS is an Excellent Razor.

How can you be faithful to one razor, when doing so means you are unfaithful to all the others?

It is true that when you own 6 or more razors it's hard to stick with just one. But you don't have to. I usually stick with just one for awhile and then try something for a couple of shaves just to mix things up a bit. There are so many good razors out there but I feel the Merkur 34c is at the top of the heap.
