Lavender vs Rose?

Does anyone have a strong opinion of Lavender versus Rose shave creams? Assume creams of the same quality/manufacturer.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Cheers

It's a pretty personal choice. I generally prefer lavender creams, but I also like rose. One nice thing about lavender creams is many of them are scented with lavender essential oil, making them pretty natural smelling. Rose oil is rarely used in mainstream creams, due to its high cost. Thus, most rose creams, while nice, don't have that fresh garden rose smell that the best rose oil provides.

Is your purpose in asking just idle curiosity, or are you trying to decide on a product to buy?

I prefer lavender and find many rose scents "too sweet" and artificial smelling.

I can imagine that.
During a short trip to England, I could not convince myself to buy a rose or lavender cream even at one of the three T's.
Just too artificially, not the real scent from nature.

The scent description at Prairie Creations convinced me that a good Lavender is not too flowerish, but actually quite herbal in tones.
I use it now for a couple of months and I like it a lot.

I then learned Malle's Une Rose, which is a perfume. Liked that a lot also.
And bought a couple of rose soaps (Mama Bear and Prairie Creations).
Nice ones.

So, no clear preference. Lavender is great, rose is starting to grow on me.

I much prefer the lavender to the rose TOBS. I haven't tried both of any other brand to give a valid comparison of them.

Like many earlier posters, I like both but prefer lavender. The herbal description is spot-on, it's a complex, "spicier" floral than rose (to me).

Real Roses are like that as well. I think it may be English Roses that do, because Rose Creams and Soaps often actually smell better than real Roses to me. My Aunt (a Florist) is adament that Roses are bordering on being a scentless flower, at least in recent years. And they don't produce oil either. The 'real Rose' scent you can get, that costs a fortune, is from the oil of a specific eastern European Rose, I believe.

Lavender is just plain foul, and rose can be too false smelling, but can be very good. I just bought a puck of SCS Parma Violet... now violet is a floral scent I can get behind

I think it may depend on how they're grown. Roses I find at florist shops are almost scentless, which comports with what your aunt observes. Conversely, roses my mother grows in her garden are quite potently scented. My mother (not a florist, but a hell of a gardener) believes commercial growers focus on volume, and do not grow the flowers in such a way as to maximize their scent. I don't know if she's right, but it makes sense, at least to a layperson like me. I have no idea how any of this might relate to oil production.

It does make sense. Also, the ones that come from Holland have even weaker scents. I do know Dutch flowers are grown on industrial scales, so it sort of fits together. Purely sepculative though. Anyway thats my experience of Roses and I've wondered why people are so keen on them. I'll keep an eye out for some in a lovely garden...

Enjoy Trumpers Violet? Its one of their original scents. And they don't offer a Lavender cream or soap for that reason, I believe.:001_cool:

It is really a question of personal choice.
Both fragrances have their own fans.
Personally I like Lavender creams over Rose creams.
I prefer the scent of Lavender much more and, scent aside, Lavender creams give me better, more comfortable shaves.
But this is just me.
I'm sure that there are here many members who can say exactly the same thing about Rose creams.
