Lather Hogs

So a couple of months ago I bought the popular Rooney 1/1, it's a great little brush and I like it. I noticed that after the break in period the lather was a little better but I never had a problem to make a good lather with this nice little brush, soaps or creams, great lather no matter what. What I did notice is that for the 1st pass, great lather, 2nd pass OK lather and for the 3rd pass, the lather is too thin and not enough, when I squeeze the brush with my hand a great lather comes out from the brush, probably enough for a pass or two. I tried to go back to the puck and it does get the job done, but for some reason the lather is kind of stuck inside. I know that dense brushes are different to use, but this is really weird. I bough my dad a Rooney 1/1 and he said he can't use it. I give him my brush, thinking that after the break in period it will be easier to use but not really.... He went back to his old Simpson which is a lather monster compare to the Rooney 1/1.... Any thoughts ?

I agree that the Rooneys are lather hogs but I found that the cure is to just use more soap (or cream, I presume) to start with.

I have been using my Rooney 3/1 in Super and I have had no problems with it being a lather hog. Maybe a little the first few times I used it but after that it was all good. I use the same almond size dollop that I use with my other brushes. It is a very densely packed brush and I would imagine density can vary from brush to brush. Have you been using your new Rooney on a daily basis since you've had it?

I use my Rooney 3 times a week since I don't shave everyday and I do feel it's getting better but the third pass is always too thin, I just have to go to the puck for a little load. I do give my face a good rinse between passes but I don't think it should matter. The thing is that inside the brush there is a beautiful lather hiding. :mad3:

Same thing was happening with my Shavemac D01. I did get better once broken in but here is what I also did.
1) Use more product
2) Dip tips slightly in water before 3rd pass
3) When lathering on face I press with medium-hard pressure (7 on a scale of 1-10) to release some lather on the 3rd pass. I only do this for a couple seconds then back to light to medium pressure (4 on scale 1-10)

I use a Rooney 1/1 finest just about every day with the same result. For my second pass I squeeze the base of the hair until the lather starts to come out of the tips and then relather. I also only do a 2 pass shave so it doesn't matter to me if there is any left for a third pass.

I had this same problem with my 3/1 Super.

Over time it has improved a lot - we're talking 3 months or so, shaving 3 times a week!

It's now much better than it was when I got it. I can see why it's so popular.

Now, if only I could stop it shedding 1/2 hairs per shave.....

My 1/1 behaves the same way, but I never thought of this as a problem, more of a feature. Like it's own little stash it's hanging on for my 3rd pass and touch ups. I just access it as others to by either dipping the tips in water or giving a light squeeze to the base.

Mine does this too. I thought it was a problematic brush, but I exchanged it and the new brush does the same thing. I've only been using a brush for a few months, so I'm still trying to figure out if this is normal for a brush (I figure they don't last forever and probably wear out somehow), typical of Rooneys, bad form on my part (although I'm pretty much following every instruction I've read on brush use), or something else entirely.

I have a Heritage Stubby, size 2 and it is very dense. In the beginning I did not use it as much as I thought I would because I felt that it was a lather hog and only used it during the weekends. I just had more time to play with it on the weekends, I loved using it. Started using it more and more and have discovered that after about 2 months the brush is breaking in and seems to hog less lather. It may be that I have started using more "tricks" I don't know. Such a killer brush! I would be interested in knowing if others have experienced the same results. Is that one of the qualities that changes when some of the guys say a brush "breaks in"?

Take Care,
Richard

I make enough lather for 2-3 passes. I always make my last pass the lather in the brush. This is good stuff. I squeeze it between finger and thumb in my hand. And it makes a great final pass lather.

I had a problems with my Rooney 1/1 and Heritage (stubby 2) being lather hogs initially. Time helped (6-8 weeks), but what also seemed to REALLY help was cleaning the brush according to Em's Place suggestion. Perhaps a quick soak in vinegar does something magic. Regardless, the 1/1 has become my favorite brush. Hope that helps.
