Lapping film - another thread

Hey guys !

I want to start honing my rasors and i've read lots of good thing about lapping films.
My question is: should i get diamond or aluminum oxide films?
Also do you know who sell diamond films in Europe ? I mention i find a few online shops that sell aluminium films but no diamond.
Thanks alot !

Don't bother with the diamond. It cuts a bit quicker and lasts a bit longer, but not nearly enough to offset the very high price compared to alox.

And welcome, Comrade, to the lapping film Revolution!

Shipping from cousins was 3,5€ for 8 sheets of film. Shipping from bestsharpeningstones was 30$. Both to Sweden.

+1 AlOx works great and price is much better.

RickBoone1 is selling some in the the vendor section of the forum with the best overseas shipping rates I've seen for those of us outside the USA and UK, compared to the other recommended sites e.g. Thorlabs

Thanks for all the replyes guys !
I'm thinking to get one of these sets:
http://www.metalclay.co.uk/products/3M-Polishing-Paper-Set.html
It contains 2 pieces of the following grits: 1,2,3,9,15,30 micron. What do you think, is this a good combination? I mean do i need a 5 micron grit sheet, or this is enough? Will be a too big gap between 9 and 3 ?

I mention i have paddle strop with TI diamond paste 0.25 and 1 microns.

That is not lapping film. It is lapping paper. I don't know if it will work well or not. If you get it and try it, please let us know how you make out with it.

Jumping from 9u to 3u is a stretch, but it can be done. You will find the 30u to be of limited usefulness... I think that is something near 400 grit.

Oh, thanks alot for the info Slash ! I will not get that because i have no ideea how will work...
This is what i've found:
http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/Scary_Sharpening.html
As you see they only have 0.3, 1 and 5 micron. Will this be enough ?
The problem with thorlabs is, they only sell minimum 10 sheets. So if i want to get 0.3, 1, 3,5 i will have to pay around 45 euros, which is alot for me...

The jump from 5u to 1u is a big one! I would try to do no more than a 3x jump, and 2x is better. But it could be done, with enough laps on the 1u and if you use faultless technique on the 5u. Maybe you would use lather on the 5u, I don't know. And you don't need the .3u at all. Most shavers find the .3u edge to be a bit harsh, though you can sweeten it a bit if you finish on film over wet paper, or hit a hanging strop pasted with CrOx. Really, the 1u is as fine as you need to go. A properly executed edge finished with 1u film over damp paper will amaze you. When you get it right, and you first shave with it, you will be asking yourself, "Did I really hone this incredible edge?"

Of course you realize that 10 sheets of each grade is a lifetime supply of film. And you can always sell a sheet or two to others faced with the same dilemna.

I think RickBoone1 is selling lapping film kits. Shipping and customs should not be a problem.

So i will need something like this: 9, 5, 3 and 1 micron right ? I'm not sure how usefull will be that 9u....
I have to order them from 2 places: workshophaven and cousins, both in UK. I saw the add of RickBoone but even if i order them from two places, i will get cheaper than he's price...
I have one more question: how is PSA (presure sensitive adhesive) lapping film working ? I mean if i stick it to a piece of glass for example, can i get it off, or it would remain sticked there ?

Damn ! Workshopheaven have only PSA.... And cousins which have non-PSA, have only 3 and 9 microns :) Apparently, getting some 1,3,5,9 microns lapping film from Europe is an easy task, but it's not :)

I did the same thing.

I have 0.3, 3, 9, 12 from cousins and 1 and 5 from workshopheaven.
I don't use the 9 or 12 much or at all.
PSA backed isn't too bad, I do a couple of laps while holding the film and find it sticks really well. I leave the backing paper on.
It's a pain in the rear end ordering from 2 places but it does keep prices down.
