What's new

Lady at work just gave me this.

I went into one of the offices at work and one of the little old ladies had heard about my new hobby. She said she had something for me and popped this out and handed it to me. I have cleaned it up some. It says Gillette on it. Any idea what year this might have been made?

This is the Old Type with what looks to have the thicker head made some time after 1921 to around 1929. The razors made before 1921 had a serial number stamped into the blade guard base. Yours looks to be in nice shape.

Thank her and shave with it!
I am pretty certain the Old Types will take the NEW blades but it doesn't work the other way around.

Yes, the Gillette "Old" types will take any standard DE razor blade. The Gillette "New" razor will also take any standard DE blade.

The Old posted by the original poster seems to be in really good condition, as most of the handles on these models usually have one, or several cracks, due to a design flaw of the handle.

You should certainly take it for a whirl, the Old should shave excellent!!

Thank you everyone. What would have been the original finish?
Yours appears to be one of the silver plated ones. Like the gold, the silver plating did not adhere well to the brass, unlike the nickel plating Gillette used later.

Well I shaved with it,:confused1
After 3 passes it still did not take much of my hair off. I pulled the new Astra blade from it and put it in my red tip and it took my hair off in quick order. I do not think it was aggressive enough.
:shaving:
