Kettle Question?

My old electric kettle is on her last leg. I was wondering if it makes a difference to buy a new electric or just get a stove top one. The electric seems to heat water faster to me. Thanks.

My experience has been that electric kettles made these days are very much not durable, and many of them will fail soon after warrantee expiration. So don't pay too much for one. The expensive ones are only valuable for looks.

Do you want one that looks and works like a traditional kettle?
If not, a hot water pot may work well, as they heat water quietly and hold heat for however long you want.

I've had for 3 years and like it very much, especially because I can set it to have water hot for me when I get up. Also, it doesn't whistle, steam and demand that I stop whatever I'm doing to come attend to it like traditional kettles do.

This type of hot water pot was talked about in this thread.

Since I only use my electric kettle for black teas which brew at close to 212 degrees and for making coffee in my Melita cone coffee maker, I opted for the least expensive kettle that Costco sold and it has served me very well. My main consideration was that it could hold enough water to fill my medium sized Brown Betty and still have enough water to fill my serving pot (which is a bit smaller than the Brown Betty... by a cup). The one I use is a Hamilton Beach 10 cup kettle and cost well under $50 and has been providing me the hot water I need for a long time. I like the traditional stove top kettles, but I could never find one with the style that I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.
